Subject: [CASANFRA] Partial Transcription for 1870 census for for the 6th Ward of San Francisco County ...
Date: Fri, 29 Aug 2003 15:27:31 -0700
I have now completed transcribing the first 120 pages (out of 238
pages)for the 6th Ward in the 1870 Census for San Francisco County, CA
and have it online. This Enumeration District (ED=44) is one of the
EDs in the 1870 San Francisco Federal Census (made up of EDs 39-57).
This completes the first half (50%)of the 6th Ward.
The 6th ward was in the 44th Enumeration District in 1870. It is my
hope that it will help a lot of people.
I believe from http://americahurrah.com/SanFrancisco/VotingWards.htm
that the 6th Ward was likely located in an area bounded by on the (N) by
Washington St., the (W) by Larkin St, the (E) by by Kearney St., and
the (S) by Pine St. I believe that at least part of this part of San
Francisco was distroyed in 1906 in the aftermath of the Great Quake of
1906 by the fire that distroyed much of San Francisco. The area covered
is in what today is part of the Financial District of San Francisco and
part of Chinatown and includes Nob Hill.
I am continuing with the transcribing of the 6th Ward and after it is
completed in a few months, I will continue on with the 1st Precinct of
the 7th Ward thru the 12th Ward. This will likely take many months to
complete, but I will periodically inform as to its status. As can be
imagined, this is going to be quite a task, but will be worth it to me,
knowing so many will be helped.
