Subject: [CASANFRA] Correction to UPDATE Walter L. HAMILTON
Date: Sat, 28 Feb 2004 16:00:26 -0600

I forgot to delete the death citation for Rae Hamilton. The Rae I found in
the SSDI was a woman. I apologize for not fixing that the first time.

Last week I asked for help to find more information about Walter Hamilton, a
cousin of mine and a brick wall.

Many kind people provided information or suggestions. I wanted to share
that with everyone in case it rings bells.

MOST IMPORTANTLY! Thank you, everyone who found something or offered a
suggestion or two. It has been very helpful.

The search has lead to San Joaquin county so I add them this time around to
the distribution list.

New found or revised information is in double [[ ]] brackets.

Walter L. Hamilton was born circa 1873 at California to Enoch Lane Hamilton
and Mary F. Hayes probably in Sacramento, Sacramento County, California. No
information is known about Walter between 1880 and 1920. He may have served
in the Spanish American War. One family tradition is that he was married
five times.

[[It appears he married a woman named Mary A. (born in DEC 1876 in
California) between Jul 1880 and 1896. They had Grace, who was born in
March 1896 in the Oakland area.]] Her birth certificate was lost in the
fires caused by the 1906 earthquake. Walter and the Mary were divorced soon
after Grace’s birth.

[[Mary A. married a man named Carl Dukey immediately after the divorce as
they have two children in the 1900 census, daughters Ruth, born in December
1897, and Enid, born February 1900. In the 1900 census this family is
living with Carl’s parents in Oakland, CA.]]

[[We still have not found Walter in the 1900 census. However in the 1910
census a Walter matching my cousin’s age appears in Oakland, CA, as a
mechanic]]

Walter then married Katherine Agnes Mueller in 1913. She was born on 13 Mar
1896 at San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas.

He and Katherine Agnes Mueller appeared on the census of 8 Jan 1920 at
Brooklyn Township, Oakland, Alameda County, California. Living with them is
their son Albert L. 4, Edna J., 1, and twins Florence and Francis 7 months

Walter may appear in the census of 23 Apr 1930 at Castoria Township, San
Joaquin County, California as a laborer

One of the twins, Francis, died on 24 Feb 1930 at Oakland, Alameda County,
California. She was buried next to her grandfather, Enoch, at Mountain View
Cemetery, Oakland, Alameda County, California

Katherine appeared on the census of 10 Apr 1930 at San Francisco, San
Francisco County, California. She says she is divorced. Living with her
are; a son, Rae (probably Albert L.), 14 years old, daughter June, 11 years
old, and Florence, 10 years old.

Katherine died on 10 Dec 1945 at Oakland, Alameda County, California, at age
49. She was buried at Mountain View Cemetery, Oakland, Alameda County,
California next to Francis and Enoch.

[[We may have found a listing for Walter’s death in the CADI. Unfortunately
it does not provide his mother’s or father’s name. But this Walter Lee
(first time finding a complete middle name) HAMILTON was born in California
on 31 July 1872 and died on 16 September 1958.]]

Walter had the following known children:

A. Grace Hamilton was born in 1896 in the Oakland area. Her birth
certificate was lost in the fires caused by the 1906 earthquake. Her mother
and father divorced soon after her birth.

B. Albert L.2 Hamilton was born in Jul 1915 at California. He probably
also went by the name Rae.

C. Edna June Hamilton [[was born June 28, 1918 in Alameda Co., CA per the
CABI]. She was also called June.

D. Florence Hamilton was born circa Jul 1919 at California. [[Her death
certificate states she was born 23 October rather than July and provides a
married name of MANNING. The birth date is verified by the CABI]] She died
6 February 1986 in San Joaquin County.]]

E. Francis L.2 Hamilton was born circa Jul 1919 at California and died in
1930. [[the CABI states her birth date was 24 October 1919]]

So, again, thanks greatly for your help.

Harry
