Hi Shelby:

Your message startled me - my name is Margaret Hinton and I was born in San Francisco ---- but not that far back. I found in the LDS site, www.familysearch.org that lists the 1880 census free:

Household:

Name Relation Marital Status Gender Race Age Birthplace Occupation Father's Birthplace Mother's Birthplace
Thomas HINTON Self M Male W 31 ENG Master Steam Vessels ENG ENG
Margaret HINTON Wife M Female W 32 WALES Keeping House IRE IRE
Mary HINTON Dau S Female W 2 ENG Ca WALES ---
Margaret A. HINTON Dau S Female W 8M CA ENG WALES

Source Information:
Census Place Petaluma, Sonoma, California
Family History Library Film 1254084
NA Film Number T9-0084
Page Number 79B

So, they were not living in San Francisco at the time of the census - perhaps they moved there later.

I don't have any information on the particular Orphanages you mentioned, sorry. How about a call to the Catholic Church in SF?

Hope this helps anyway.

Margie

Looking for ANY information on Mary or Margaret HINTON born 13 August 1877
in San Francisco. Her parents were Thomas and Margaret Barry HINTON.

In1884 she was placed in an orphanage in San Francisco run by the Ladies
Protection and Relief Society. In 1895 she may have been a domestic at the
Roman Catholic Orphan Asylum.

She was my grandmother's older sister.

Any information would certainly be appreciated!
