Subject: Partial Transcription for 1870 census for for the 8th Ward, 2nd Precinct of San Francisco County...
Date: Sun, 13 Jun 2004 18:52:37 -0700

I have now completed transcribing the first 60 pages (out of 238
pages)for the 8th Ward, 2nd Precinct in the 1870 Census for San
Francisco County, CA and have it online. This Enumeration District
(ED=48) is one of the EDs in the 1870 San Francisco Federal Census (made
up of EDs 39-57).

This completes the first 1/4 (25%)of the 8th Ward, 2nd Precinct.

The 8th Ward, 2nd Precinct was in the 48th Enumeration District in
1870. It is my hope that it will help a lot of people.

I believe from http://americahurrah.com/SanFrancisco/VotingWards.htm
that the 8th Ward, 1st Precinct was likely located in an area bounded
by on the (N) by Post St., the (W) by Larkin St, the (S) by Market St,
and the (E) by Kearny St. I believe that at least part of this part of
San Francisco was distroyed in 1906 in the aftermath of the Great Quake
of 1906 by the fire that distroyed much of San Francisco.

Main Streets running through this area today include (east-west): Post
St., Geary St., O'Farrell St., Ellis St., Eddy St., Turk St., Golden
Gate Ave., McAllister St., Fulton St., Grove St.; (north-south): Larkin
St., Hyde St., Leavenworth St., Jones St., Taylor St., Mason St., Cyril
Magnin St., Powell St., Stockton St., Grant St., Kearney St.. Union
Square and the Tenderloin are also located in this area as well as the
Federal Building, the SF Library, The Hastings College of Law (part of
the University of California), and part of today's Civic Center.

I am continuing with the transcribing of the 8th Ward, 2nd Precinct and
after it is completed in a few weeks, I will continue on with the 9th
Ward thru the 12th Ward. This will likely take many months to complete,
but I will periodically inform as to its status. As can be imagined,
this is going to be quite a task, but will be worth it to me, knowing so
many will be helped.
