Subject: Drafted for WWI

My grandfather was in the Army in 1918 during WWI. He was living in New York
and got stationed in California. Is there anyway I can find out whether he
joined or whether he was drafted? Was there a draft for World War I or was it
an all volunteer army? Thanks for your help. Is Letterman Hospital at the
Presidio still open?
