Subject: Partial Transcription for 1870 census for the 9th Ward of San Francisco County.. .
Date: Sun, 21 Nov 2004 12:46:46 -0800
I have now completed transcribing the first 216 pages (out of 274
pages)for the 9th Ward in the 1870 Census for San Francisco County, CA
and have it online. This Enumeration District (ED=49) is one of the
EDs in the 1870 San Francisco Federal Census (made up of EDs 39-57).
This completes the first 3/4 (75%)of the 9th Ward.
The 9th Ward was in the 49th Enumeration District in 1870. It is my
hope that it will help a lot of people.
I believe from http://americahurrah.com/SanFrancisco/VotingWards.htm
that the 9th Ward was likely located in an area boundon the (N) by
Harrison St., the (W) by 7th St, the (S) by Channel St, and the (E) by
the San Francisco Bay. I believe that at least part of this part of San
Francisco was distroyed in 1906 in the aftermath of the Great Quake of
1906 by the fire that distroyed much of San Francisco.
Main Streets running through this area today include (east-west):
Harrison St., Bryant St., Brannan St., Townsend St., King St., Berry
St., Channel St.; (north-south): The Embarcadero, Delancey St., 2nd St.,
3rd St., 4th St., 5th St., 6th St., 7th St.. The west touchdown of the
SF-Oakland Bay Bridge and I-80 Freeway as well as the north end of the
I-280 Freeway is included in this area. Also included in this area are
the Pac-Bell Stadium (home of the SF Giants), the CalTrain depot, the
Hall of Justice & County Jail. Piers 24, 26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 36, 38, &
40 along the Embarcadero are also in this area and also the Mission
Creek marina/Channel in the China Basin area.
I am continuing with the transcribing of the 9th Ward and after it is
completed in a few weeks, I will continue on with the 10th Ward, 1st
Precinct thru the 12th Ward. This will likely take many months to
complete, but I will periodically inform as to its status. As can be
imagined, this is going to be quite a task, but will be worth it to me,
knowing so many will be helped.
