Hello,

I am looking for information on my mother's uncle, Charles Pearson Elam.
According to family legend, he was a newpaper reporter or editor in San
Francisco. At the time of the 1906 earthquake and fire, he was quarantined with an
illness. As a result, he survived but his wife and child(ren) died in the fire.
Soon after he moved to Upstate New York and worked for various newspapers.
He married my mother's aunt who looked just like his late wife and had a son
and daughter but within a few years suffered mental collapse from which he
never recovered.

I have found evidence that he was an editor of a NYS paper but have found no
proof that he lived in San Francisco at the turn of the century. Nancy Melton
kindly checked the 1902 and '05 SF telephone books and the 1899, 1903 and
1908 SF City Directories. He is not listed. No Elams are listed with those who
died in 1906.

Could someone please check the 1900 Census for me? He was born in London in
1882 to American parents Samuel and Helen Burr Elam. I would love to know
more about this interesting man. Thanks. Sandy
