Hi
Can anyone help me with a John JONES who is shown on the 1880 census as being in South Ruby Hill, Eureka, Nevada, as a Miner?
My John Jones was my great-grandfather who disappeared after my grandfather was born in 1864. John was born in Barnstaple, Devon to parents Robert Jones and Harriett Jones, nee Godfrey, in 1838/40. Family gossip states that he went to Canada and there is a possible in the Canadian 1871 census but nothing in the 1881.
John sent a letter to my grandfather's sister Martha, enclosing some rings but she threw the lot on the fire "I want nothing from that man" being her comments. This could have been at the turn on the 20th century as Martha's daughter remembered the occasion according to her daughter.
Any clues as to what happened to the John Jones on the 1880 census would be appreciated.
Regards
Anne in Markyate, Hertfordshire, England.
