Hi all,

I'm new to this list, trying to find out about Walter Maurice (or Morris)
SIMON, a sailor, who died in SF in June 1896. He was born in Ruthin,
Denbighshire, Wales in about 1866 - I've been trying to find out what
happened to him for ages, but was unable to find him in UK censuses after
1881 (when he was living in Liverpool) or a death record or anything.

Last weekend I found a record of his mother's memorial inscription - she is
buried at Llandrillo in Denbighshire, and Walter is commemorated on her
headstone as having died at San Francisco on 13 June 1896. I found that his
death was reported in the San Francisco Call on 16 June 1896 (love that
Google!). I'll be sending off a cheque for a photocopy of the entry, but
that will take WEEKS and I don't know that it will tell me much more than
bare details. I've looked at the Ellis Island site but no joy there. Walter
is the first of the family who we are certain "went to America" so it's
quite exciting!

Does anyone know anything about my Walter? He was 29 when he died - maybe he
had a wife or children? His parents were Ellen THOMAS (c1844-1906) and
Walter SIMON (c1843-1880). I have lots of info on the family I'd be happy to
share - Ellen's brother settled here in Australia and was my husband's
great-grandfather. The family in Wales were quite distinguished.

Hope someone can help,
Loretta Thomas
