Subject: Partial Transcription for 1870 census for the 11th Ward, 1st District (Precinct) of San Francisco County.. .
Date: Sat, 22 Oct 2005 17:34:31 -0700
I have now completed transcribing the first 204 pages (out of 254
pages)for the 11th Ward, 1st District (Precinct) in the 1870 Census for
San Francisco County, CA and have it online. This Enumeration District
(ED=53) is one of the EDs in the 1870 San Francisco Federal Census (made
up of EDs 39-57).
This Enumerator used the term "Dist." or "District" instead of the
customary "Precinct" in identifying the this sub-division of the 11th
ward. This is why "Dist" of "District" is used at the top of each page
of the transcribed cnsus. In my transcribe notes, I make note of this
with "District(Precinct)".
This completes approximately the first 3/4 (78%)of the 11th Ward, 1st
District (Precinct).
The 11th Ward, 1st District(Precinct) was in the 53rd Enumeration
District in 1870. It is my hope that it will help a lot of people.
I believe from http://americahurrah.com/SanFrancisco/VotingWards.htm
that the 11th Ward, 1st District (Precinct) was likely located in an
area bounded by on the (NW) by Market St., the (NE) by 7th St, the (E)
by Mission Creek, the (S) by 16th St, and on the (W) by Dolores St. I
believe that at least part of this part of San Francisco was distroyed
in 1906 in the aftermath of the Great Quake of 1906 by the fire that
distroyed much of San Francisco.
Main Streets running through this area today include (SW-NE): Market
St., Mission St., Howard St., Folsum St., Harrison St., Bryant St.,
Brannan St., Townsend St., King St., Berry St., Hooper St.Stevenson St.,
Jessie St., Colton St., Chase St., Burns Pl., Kissling St., Minna St.,
Natoma St., Tehama St., Clementina St., Sheridan St., Ringold St., Heron
St., Brush St., McLea St. ; (NW-SE): 7th St., 8th St., 9th St., 10th
St., 11th St., 12th St., Gough St., Colusa St., Lafayette St., Juniper
St.Grace St., Washburn St., Langton St., Dore St., Sumner St., Rausch
St., Kate St., Decatur St., Converse St., Gordon St., Norfolk St., Brady
St., Gough St.; (N-S) Dolores St., Guerrero St., Valencia St., Mission
St., Capp St., South Van Ness Ave., Shotwell St., Folsum St., Harrison
St., Alabama St., Florida St., Bryant St., Hampshire St., Portrero St.,
Utah St., San Bruno Ave., Vermont St., Henry Adams St., Kansas St.,
Rhode Island St., DeHaro St., Carolina St., Spencer St., Rosemont ,
Ramona, Pearl St., Elgin Park, Stevenson St., Woodward, Otis, , Jessie,
Trainor, Isis, Bernice; (W-E) McCoppin St., 13th St., 14th St., 15thj
St., 16th St., Division St., Duboce St., Alameda St., Plum St., Clinton
Park, Brosnan, Sparrow St., Erie St., Pink St.,; The part of the
Central Freeway (U.S.101) that remains and the James Lick Fwy
(I-80/US-101) are today located in this area. This includes the new
Central Freeway touchdown ramp under construction. Also in this area
is the Strauss Playground and the of Animal Care & Control. Also
Mission Dolores is located near the SW corner of this area.
This area covers much of the Mission District and "South of Market"
area.
I am continuing with transcribing the 11th Ward, 1st District (Precinct)
and after it is completed in a few weeks, I will continue on with the
11th Ward, 2nd Precinct thru the 12th Ward. This will likely take many
months to complete, but I will periodically inform as to its status. As
can be imagined, this is going to be quite a task, but will be worth it
to me, knowing so many will be helped.
