You're right James -- one of the most notable records that were
re-recorded are the probate records. The California Genealogical
Society has most of those available for review. You can go and look or
you can pay them to do limited research. http://www.calgensoc.org

A new book will be released shortly through CGS: Raking the Ashes:
Genealogical Strategies for Pre-1906 San Francisco Research by Nancy
Peterson. I've read & reviewed a pre-release copy & it's going to set
the standard as the new Pre-1906 reference for San Francisco genealogy.
I'll send out a notice when it's available.
