SAMUEL CATTS

Samuel Catts, a well-known old-time resident of Stockton, died recently
at the home of his son-in-law, R. Lauxen, at No. 319 Channel street, in
that city. Apoplexy was the cause of his death. When he had not arisen
at his usual hour a servant entered his room and found him unconscious
and dying. A physician was summoned, but when he reached the house Mr.
Catts was dead.

The deceased was born in Baltimore, Maryland and was 72 years old at the
time of his death. He came to California with Colonel Stevenson's Regiment
in March 1847, and served in the Mexican war. The year after his arrival
he settled on the present site of Stockton. He was the first person to
locate there after Captain Weber. He engaged for several years in teaming
to the mines. He made that city his headquarters, and often went as far
east as Nevada. He afterwards became connected with the general-merchandise
kept by Jones & Hewlett. For the last twenty years he did not actively
engage in any business. In 1888 he was very severely injured by an awning
of the old Simpson & Gray building falling on him, and he never entirely
recovered from the effects of the injuries received then.

The deceased leaves two children, George E. Catts and Mrs. R. Lauxen.
