Robert L. Isbell

Robert L. "Bobby" Isbell died March 8, 2003, after a short but bitter battle with cancer.

A native Californian, he was born in Stockton to Clifford L. Isbell and Roberta Ramiociotti on Nov. 13, 1941. He was 61 years old.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1965, then moved to Davis in 1966 and went to work at Ernie Hartz Ford, which later became Hatton Marks Ford.

In 1982, he and his partner, Doug Hatton, opened Center City Automotive at the same old Ford dealership at Fifth and G streets. In 1997, they moved their business to its current location on Madson place.

Over the years, Center City Automotive has donated to and sponsored many baseball teams in Davis.

Isbell was governor of the Davis Moose Lodge and received his fellowship degree from the Loyal Order of Moose.

For the last few years, he took great pleasure in fishing on his boat, "Rocky," and spending every weekend at the family's home away from home in Bodega Bay.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Tryna, and his grandson, C. Taylor Isbell. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; his son, Clifford G. Isbell and his wife Cindy; his daughters, Kathy Lavorico and her husband Alex and Laura Winton and her husband Rick; granddaughters, April Isbell and Brooke and Megan Winton; grandsons, Wade Winton, Anthony Isbell, Alex Lavorico IV and Luke Robert Lavorico; his sister, Charlotte Brooks; and his brothers, Clifford and David Isbell, and Butch and Ray Chandler and their families.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his name may be made to the Bob Isbell-Davis High School Baseball Boosters Fund, c/o Bank of America, 325 E St., Davis, CA 95616.

Graveside services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Davis Cemetery. A gathering in his memory will follow the service at the Isbell family's home.

"We will miss him terribly, but he's gone fishing," his family says. "Have fun fishing, Bobby, with all your old buddies."
