Berniece M. Vaughan
Berniece M. Vaughan, age 91 of Lodi, passed away on Sept. 16, 2004, in a local hospital following a brief illness. She was born on January 24, 1913, in Parkville, Missouri, where she was raised and attended school. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and teaching credentials from Parkville College in 1934. She married George Vaughan in 1935 and moved to Lodi four years later.
Mrs. Vaughan was employed as a teacher with Garfield, Lincoln and Needham elementary schools. She was vice principal and principal at Needham Elementary School, before becoming principal at Washington Elementary School.
Since retiring in 1978, she has traveled to Russia, China, Europe, Mexico and throughout the United States. She also raised orchids and was involved in genealogical research.
A member of First United Methodist Church; Lodi Antique Club; Retired Principal's Club of Lodi Unified School District; Daughters of American Revolution; Hutchins Street Square Writing Club. She was a published author, having had more than fifty articles published in various periodicals. She was an avid collector of Depression Glass.
She is survived by daughters, Rosemary Anderson (Gary) , Elsa Rae Pearce both of Lodi; grandchildren, Michael Collins (Debra) of Lodi, Jennifer Kanter (Howard) of Santa Cruz, Dave Pearce (Sue) of Minnesota. 8 Great-grandchildren; sisters, Velma Loncar (Jack) of Missouri, Bettie Noland of Florida, Marjorie Dudley of Missouri; Sister-in-law, Flora Miller of Michigan; brother, Bill Miller (Loretta) of Arizona.
Preceded in death by her husband, George Vaughan in 1980; brother, Kenneth Miller; brothers-in-law, Carol Noland and Ben Dudley.
funerals will be held on Thursday at 10 a.m. at Lodi Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Lodi Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Thursday from 8 to 10 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Leukemia and Lymphoma Society c/o Jennifer Kanter, 8070 Harvard Dr., Ben Lomond CA 95005.
