IN JAIL AGAIN -- John LORAINE was arrested yesterday and placed in jail for
being drunk and disorderly. Another individual, upon the same charge, was
arrested to keep him company. On arriving at the jail LORAINE fell upon his
fellow prisoner and beat him unmercifully, for which little amusement he
was tied up and placed in close quarters. The pair will undergo an
examination this morning before Judge BROWN.

>T.A. BARBER, of Sacramento, has filed a complaint for divorce from his
wife, Harriet G. BARBER. The parties were married in Brooklyn in 1854. He
charges that she has abandoned him, and has since and is now living in
adultery.

DIED -- near this city, on Friday, 20th inst., Matilda H. CHESTNUTWOOD,
aged 3 years, 9 months.

DIED -- on April 18th, of acute dysentery, Louisa Green, youngest daughter
of R.L. and H.E. GARDNER, of Knight's Ferry; aged 2 years, 1 month.

FOR CITY MARSHAL -- Elbert WEEKES will be a candidate for the office of
City Marshal, at the ensuing municipal election, subject to the decision of
the Democratic City Convention.

FOR CITY COLLECTOR -- H.W. GILLINGHAM will be a candidate for the office of
City Collector, at the ensuing municipal election, subject to the decision
of the Democratic City Convention.

FOR CITY COLLECTOR -- V.M. PEYTON is a candidate for the office of City
Collector, subject to the decision of the Democratic City Convention, to be
held April 30th, 1860.

FOR CITY MARSHAL -- Cha's C. TERRILL will be a candidate for re-election to
the office of City Collector, subject to the decision of the Democratic
City Convention.

FOR CITY MARSHAL -- B.F. SANBORN is an Independent candidate for the office
of City Collector, at the ensuing municipal election.

SAN FRANCISCO; April 23
-John VINCENT, an intemperate man, fell into the dock front on Washington
street, about 1 o'clock this morning. He was rescued by officers PARK and
FORNEY. He was conveyed to the Hospital, but before he reached there, died.
-Henry SMITH attempted suicide today with oxalic acid -- was taken to the
Hospital and will probably die. He had in his pocket a bottle marked oxalic
acid.
-H. LEWISON, an Englishman, attempted suicide today at noon, by jumping off
the end of Pacific street wharf. He was rescued by a boatman.

KNIGHT'S FERRY; Apr. 23 -- The funeral of Louise GARDNER took place on
Friday last. Rev. Mr. BISHOP read the funeral service, and the remains of
the little one were followed to its resting place at Green Springs, a
distance of about 10 miles.

DISCOVERY of a CAVE --
A magnificent natural cave was discovered in El Dorado county a few days
since. It is located upon the Whisky Bar road, and abreast of the Cave
Valley marble quarry. A letter in the 'Standard' has the following in
reference to it:

"Some men who were at work there, excavating for a lime-kiln, broke through
into a cave, which, he says, is the most magnificent sight he ever saw;
and, judging from specimens which he exhibited, I think it worth while to
pay a visit, and shall try to go up tomorrow. Mayor SWAN (of Placerville),
was exploring for 2 hours; visited several large rooms of several hundred
feet in length, by nearly as many broad, until he was brought to a halt by
a lake, the extent of which is as yet unknown. The floor, as stalactites,
are all of a beautiful white crystallized marble."

SAN FRANCISCO; April 24
-Divorce suit of Anna A. GIMMY vs. John G. GIMMY, occupied all the morning
and is still on trial. Plaintiff alleges cruelty, defendant adultery.
-BERRYESSA who was arrested on a charge of fraudulently destroying a deed
was sent to the Court of Sessions today.
-A sailor, name unknown, was drowned last night by falling through the
wharf corner of Front and Vallejo streets.

ELECTION of DELEGATES -- A primary election was held yesterday in the
several wards of the city, for the choice of delegates to the so-called
Democratic City Convention, to be held in the City Hall on Saturday next,
for the nomination of city officers. The following are the delegates elected:

-1st Ward: Lot DAY, J. MARKS, John SCHRECK, W.M. CRIDER, F. SEILNACHT, D.J.
OULLAHAN, J. SADDLER
-2nd Ward: J. DOTY, C.F. WURSTER, Adam SNYDER, W.B. SOUTH, S. FERGUSON, J.
BALTHIS, Louis MERSFELDER, J.D. STURM
-3rd Ward: C.H. HUFFMAN, Frank MORSE, John GINN, George DAHL, Joseph SMITH,
James PEARSON.

SAN FRANCISCO; April 25
-A young man named CONGLETON attempted suicide this morning, by taking
strychnine. He lies in a critical condition, and has a wife 16 years old,
and a daughter.
-Last evening about 10 o'clock, the parents of a young girl, aged 17, made
complaint against one Mary DEMPSTER for seducing their daughter from their
house last evening. Search was immediately made and the parties were found
in company with 2 "nice young men" in lodging rooms on Mission street, over
the Apollo Baths. The young lady was seated on foot of the bed with young
man -- being divested of hoops, shoes and stockings, but nothing more. She
was conveyed to her home by her over-joyed parent. As yet no arrests have
been made, although the parties are known.
-The new Jewish burying ground at the Mission was dedicated today.

SAN FRANCISCO; April 26
-The name of the young man who was drowned while bathing off North Beach
yesterday afternoon was Martin CRAUWAY [or CRANWAY], a pantry man on the
steamer Orizeba. He was 24 years of age and a native of New Orleans.
-This morning cries of a man in distress was heard under Washington street
wharf. A lady heard his cries. Search was soon after thoroughly made, but
as the mud is very deep, in struggling he sunk beneath the surface, and
will never be found.
-Richard GRIFFIN, a farmer living 8 miles from Oakland, was found dead in
his garden Tuesday evening last, having been shot through the head by a
rifle ball. Verdict of jury accidental. He was 35 years of age and has a
family in the Atlantic States.
-Mr. BRIGGS, 3rd mate of ship Neptune's Car, was arrested yesterday on a
charge of cruelty to a sailor named Thomas WILSON. He was examined today.
-The body of an unknown man was found yesterday in the bay, near Lime
Point. His feet were tied together with a rope. It is suspected he was
murdered.

HORSE THIEF in JAIL -- An Englishman by name of Francis TRESS was brought
to this city last evening by Mr. GAGE, from whom he had stolen a horse on
Sunday last, and succeeded in making way with the animal as far as the
Mission of San Jose, where he was arrested. TRESS acknowledges the theft,
but pleads intoxication at the time the act was committed.

>JUDGE CREANER arrived home from his visit to the Atlantic States
yesterday morning.

>A MAN named J.D. COOPER committed suicide by shooting himself on King's
river on the 11th inst.

SAN FRANCISCO; April 29
-The notorious Mrs. CUNNINGHAM (widow of Dr. BURDELL) and her 2 daughters
arrived yesterday on the Sonora.

HORRIBLE -- A child was picked up dead with its throat cut, floating in the
bay at San Francisco on Friday.
