MURDER of 2 MEN in Mariposa, by Indians
Mariposa; June 22d, 1860
Mr. Editor: Yesterday there was a burial here of 2 men named BEAN and
GIBBS. Noticing 2 coffins in a wagon and but 2 or 3 men starting with them
to the burial ground, I made enquiries and received the following account
of their death:
The 2 men had been living on the Colorado with 2 squaws. Some weeks since
the women ran away from them and returned to their rancheria some 6 or 8
miles from this town [Mariposa]. BEAN and GIBBS while hunting for them,
seized an Indian and tied him to a tree, and stuck knives into him,
torturing him until he told where the squaws were. They then went to the
rancheria and took away the 2 women, who in a short time again run away,
returning back.
BEAN and GIBBS again started after them, being armed with a bowie-knife and
6-shooter, each one having a rifle and the other a shot gun, in addition,
saying they would either have the squaws or kill some of the bucks. They
reached the rancheria on Tuesday, 21st ult.
The next morning an Indian brought word into town that BEAN and GIBBS had
been killed and were hid on the South Fork of the Chowchilla. A party
started immediately after the bodies and found them to be where reported,
hid in the crevice of a rock. They had been thrown into a deep canyon, and
the Indians then had lowered themselves with their riatas and hid the
bodies so securely that they never would have been discovered had no Indian
informed on them.
The bodies were brought to town. They were horribly disfigured. They were
killed by arrows and chopped with hatchets; the eye and portion of the nose
of 1 having been gouged out with a tomahawk in such manner as to present a
hideous spectacle. The Indians who committed the deed left, fearing the
whites would take revenge. The citizens here do not blame the Indians for
the death of the men under the circumstances.

DEATH of MISS BRADFORD -- The young lady above named, the victim of a
terrible accident at Ravenswood on Wednesday last, died in the arms of her
mother in San Francisco on Monday.
DANIEL O'CONNELL in Trouble Again -- Mrs. Mary O'CONNELL made complaint in
Justice McCausland's Court yesterday against her husband, Daniel O'CONNELL,
charging him with threatening her life. O'CONNELL was released from a term
of imprisonment on Monday served in the city jail upon conviction for a
like offense, and in the shortest possible time became intoxicated. He
proceeded, in the evening, to the house occupied by his wife on San Joaquin
street, where he began a series of assaults upon the doors and windows.
Upon the refusal of his wife to admit him, he threatened her life and
applied to her the basest epithets. The neighbors being aroused by the
noise, interfered and endeavored to persuade him to go away and return when
sober; but he gave no heed to any of them, until seized by "Special
Policemen" ELLSWORTH, and lodged in jail. While on his way to jail the
muscle of his "left" contracted and struck the policeman in the "ivory
box," for which he received in return a blow upon the head that well high
"sent him to the ground." He appeared yesterday in court and confessed to
the charge, "so far as his recollection served him," and after an
examination of witnesses, was held to answer in the sum of $200 -- failing
in which, he was sent to jail.
MAN KILLED at Mokelumne Hill -- A man by the name of Abner HALL, formerly
in the employ of L. & A.W. GOODWIN, as a butcher, was killed on Monday at
Mokelumne Hill, by a young man named LEE. The 'Union' says there were
several blows inflicted with a knife -- a 6-inch blade -- one or more of
which were sufficient to cause death. LEE was arrested and is now in jail.
GOING BACK to TEXAS -- A man by the name of HIGGINS, with his family,
comprising his wife and some 6 or 8 children, passed through this city
yesterday, en route from Oregon for Texas. They had with them 2 4-horse
wagons, 4 horses and several head of cattle. They left Texas a few years
since for Oregon, and have determined to return, being satisfied that the
former State offers greater inducements to the settler by the greater
security the farmer has in the title to his lands.

A DARING FEAT -- A full grown panther was killed on Tuesday last near the
ranch of Mr. SKELTON, about 15 miles from Mariposa, by Edward SKELTON, a
boy only 13 years of age. The 'Star' says the animal was sitting in a tree
top, having just made a meal of a fawn. The boy fired at him, the ball
taking effect through the loins -- just grazing the backbone, and crippling
him so that he could not jump. He very cooly loaded his rifle again and
gave him the 2nd shot which brought him down.
