VALEDICTORY -- [written by Benj. P. KOOSER]
[transcriber -- very lengthy article; I transcribed portions having to do
with his personal and family history]
With the close of the past volume, we (the editor) retired from the control
of the editorial columns of the San Andreas Independent. the enterprise
which we started 2 years ago Over 12 years ago, in the flush of youthful
expectation and adventure, we left the home of our boyhood for this, then
unknown and almost fabled country. It was in times of war, when our country
demanded the services of the young and the patriotic. We responded to the
exigency, freely surrendering 5 years -- the best years of our life -- to
that service. If those 5 years produced but little pecuniary gain, or
tended still less to advance our plan of life, it is at least a subject of
pride to know that we have faithfully served on the tented field, under
the most glorious banner of nations.
During the 6 or 7 years that have intervened since our quitting the army,
our lot has been cast in the midst of the exciting scenes that stirred the
men of California and roused into thrilling life the sleeping atoms of a
new world. We have mined, printed and edited, with varied success; but
still with a constant eye upon the unpretending goal of our earlier hopes.
Many a phantom that rose to lure us for a moment with ignis-fatuus light,
we have had the bad luck to pursue; visions of wealth we have had -- empty
as ephemeral, but they never seduced us from straight path of honest industry.
One of the earliest pioneers, we have seen this now beautiful country in
the palmy days of her blissful ignorance and sluggish repose And now, with
health impaired and the fire of youth considerably abated, we begin to turn
our eye towards the home of our childhood Away, in the spruce-environed
glades of the Alleghanies, over 12 years ago, we left an aged father, and
relatives dear to us. Once more, eer we pass the mid way of this our
mortal life, we long to see them, and renew in memory the haunts of
boyhood To this end it has been necessary that we retire from the editorial
duties of the Independent and in doing so we bid all our readers a long
and final editorial adieu.
It also affords us pleasure to assure the reader that one of the ablest
and best of these contributors is to be the future editor of this paper --
Mr. Samuel SEABOUGH. Mr. S. is a practical printer and well calculated to
fill the important and responsible position he has assumed
In conclusion, we tender out thanks to the contemporary press for the many
courtesies and kind encouraging words received and may oblivion bury all
differences and grievances, if any there be, which may have been called
into existence by thoughtless words, heedlessly spoken.

>MRS. LUCY ANDERSON, wife of ex-Lieut. Gov. ANDERSON, recently died at
Placerville of consumption.
SHOOTING at MURPHYS -- A friend informs us that on Saturday last a Mexican
woman was shot by a man who had for sometime past been living with her. The
womans name is PATRITO. The wound is considered dangerous. Cause,
jealousy. Perpetrator, escaped.
MR. JOS. KNIGHT -- We desire to return our sincere thanks to this
gentleman, the agent of Wells, Fargo & Co.s Express in this town. Since
the establishment of the Independent, he has been its indefatigable
friend, always favoring us with the fullest and earliest files of exchanges
and befriending us by his liberality, in numberless attentions. Mr. K. is a
prompt and energetic business man; and mingles in his associations with the
business world that suavity and courtesy which indicate the man of genuine
good heart. We owe him much, and feel that this is a most unsubstantial way
of discharging the obligation.
PERSONAL -- We are happy to announce that an old and esteemed resident of
this county, Mr. W. CARLOW, has safely arrived from the Atlantic States,
with his wife and children, all in good health. Mr. C. formerly resided at
the town of Carsons, where he is very well known as an industrious citizen,
and has hosts of friends.
PARTICULARS of the LATE ROBBING Near LOTTMANs Ranch -- Mr. RUSSELL, the
teamster who was robbed about a week ago, by 3 highwaymen near LOTTMANs
Ranch, informs us that he drove away from LATIMERs store about sundown,
and before he had proceeded far, a man with a bundle of blankets fastened
to a stick, thrown across his shoulder, met him in the road and asked the
privilege of riding. Mr. R. told him to get in. They had proceeded but a
short distance from this point, when 2 men stepped out before his mules and
commanded him to stop. Turning round to see in what spirit his foot-sore
passenger took the matter, he found the ingrate standing close to him with
a large knife drawn. Before Mr. R. could speak, the fellow in the wagon
informed him that it was his money they wanted, and demanded that he should
shell out with dispatch. They unbooted him and got $47.75. Afterwards they
rummaged through his blankets and clothes to obtain more, and finally
ripped open a sack of barley in the wagon, thinking it might possibly
contain money. One of the robbers is described as a man over 6 feet in
hight, rather slim and lank-visaged, sallow complexion, dark beard and
hair, and going tolerably well dressed.
RE-ESTABLISHMENT of the TELEGRAPH OFFICE -- Ever since the fire we have
been without a telegraph office in this place, to the great dissatisfaction
of merchants, printers and news-mongers. We are happy to announce that Mr.
Robt. H. BROTHERTON will re-establish an office here on the 1st of October.
Mr. B. is one of the best operators in the State.
