*****************************

MARRIED -- on the 31st Jan., at the residence of the bride's father,
by Hon. James H. HARDY; Joseph BERNARDI to Rosa GEBHARDT, both of
Mokelumne Hill.

MARRIED -- at San Andreas, on Saturday, Feb. 18th, by Rev. James
MOTTER; Mr. Wm. GRIFFITH to Miss Catharine HARRINGTON, all of this county.

MARRIED -- on Monday, Feb. 20th, at the same place, by the same; Mr.
Peter WHERITY to Miss Mary KELLY.

KILLED in a TUNNEL -- Charles HOLTERMAN, a native of Prussia, was
killed by the caving of a tunnel, situated near Copenhagen Diggings,
Chili Gulch, on Monday last.

ANOTHER FATAL AFFRAY -- On Monday morning last there was another
fatal shooting affray at Reynold's Ferry at the southern end of this
county. The facts as near as we could gather them from FINNEGAN --
the officer who arrested one of the parties -- are as follows:

Mr. Richard RIDGWAY, of the firm of Moore & Ridgway, Stockton, had
used a Mr. PETERSON, who owned the Ferry at the place above named,
and obtained a judgment. Unaccompanied by an officer, he repaired to
the Ferry, and demanded possession of the ferry-boat, and, we
believe, a store owned by PETERSON; the latter refused to accede to
his demand, unless he would bring an officer. RIDGWAY insisted, and
from words the matter proceeded to a scuffle, in which RIDGWAY fired
a pistol, the ball going through PETERSON's hat. PETERSON fired
immediately afterward, 5 shots; the 1st took effect in RIDGWAY's neck
-- 2 entered his breast, 1 his thigh and the other, his stomach.

Immediately after the fall of RIDGWAY from the effect of these
fearful wounds, PETERSON went before a Justice of the Peace and
surrendered himself. He was taken to jail by Constable FINNEGAN on
Monday evening. We understand that there was a witness present during
the fight, who corroborates the above facts, and who says also that
RIDGWAY was the 1st to draw his pistol. Mr. RIDGWAY died on Monday evening.

-------------------------------------------------

ALMOST a FATAL ACCIDENT -- On Tuesday night, as Mr. A.J. BARKER, of
Old Gulch, in company with Mr. BENSON, was returning homeward from
San Andreas, his horse -- a wild ungovernable mustang -- took a
sudden fright and threw Mr. BARKER from his seat, his foot hanging in
the stirrup, he was dragged at full run for 2 or 300 yards, when Mr.
BENSON succeeded in checking the horse and BARKER's foot became
disentangled. He was badly bruised, and had the flesh most shockingly
torn from his back and shoulders; was unconscious for 5 hours; but
his physician reports that no bones are fractured and he will soon be
able to go about again.

BADLY INJURED by a BLAST -- Near the same place, on the Friday
preceding the Monday above named, as 2 miners -- COTTRELL and BRADLEY
-- were putting in a blast, an accidental explosion took place, by
which Mr. BRADLEY had his left arm badly mangled, and Mr. COTTRELL
was painfully burned by the flash of the powder.

UPPER CALAVERITAS SCHOOL -- The School in Upper Calaveritas will be
re-opened a week from next Monday -- March 5th, under the
preceptorship of Mr. D.K. SWIM, the former teacher.
