The San Andreas Independent
San Andreas, Calaveras County, CA
Saturday, 31 March 1860
*****************************
BIRTH -- at Murphys, March 19th, to the wife of Peter McNEEVE, of a son.
BIRTH -- at Robinson's Ferry, Calaveras county, on the 23d inst., to
the wife of James PALACHE, of a daughter.
BIRTH -- at Rich Gulch Flat, March 19th, to the wife of John HANLON,
of twin sons.
BIRTH -- at the same place, March 25th, to the wife of Michael NOBLE, of a son.
MARRIED -- on the 20th inst., by J. HANSELMAN; O.R.W. KALLENBACK to
Emily Jane, eldest daughter of Wm. H. ROBINSON, all of Salt Spring Valley.
MARRIED -- at Cronk's Ranch, March 14th, by W.K. BOUCHER, Esq.; J.B.
SMITH, of Cave City, to Mary CRONK.
DIED -- at San Andreas, March 27th, Thomas McGEE, aged 42 years, a
native of Dublin, Ireland.
SUDDEN DEATH -- Thomas McGEE, a shoe-maker, employed for some time
past by Mr. LAVELLE, of San Andreas, was found by the watchman, Mr.
BELLOWS, in an unoccupied house on China street, about dark on Monday
night, very weak, sick and in miserable plight from excessive
drinking and cruel usage by a miscreant who had deluged him with
water. Mr. BELLOWS very kindly lifted him to his feet, but he was so
weak that he sank to the floor at once. He was then carried to his
employer's house, where he received every attention that his
situation demanded from a humane heart; but at 12 o'clock he expired.
It is not susceptible of clear proof who threw the water on this
poor, weakly and sick man; but the heartless wretch that did it,
would not hesitae to do any mean thing. We trust he may be found out,
and punished as he deserves. Deceased leaves a wife and 2 children.
------------------------------------------------
MURDERED -- M. D'ANMALE, the Sonora and Arizona correspondent of the
'Bulletin,' a number of whose graphic sketches we have recopied in
the 'Independent' within the past 2 months, was murdered on the 6th
of this month, by his own servants, near Fort Buchanan, in Arizona.
------------------------------------------------
DEPARTING -- Mr. J.W. WILLARD and family, old-time and estimable
citizens of San Andreas, took their departure from here en route to
San Francisco, on Thursday last. Mr. W.'s family return to their old
home in Leominster, Mass. May the sea, and the sky, and the elements
and Providence deal kindly with them, for they have been our friends
and the friends of all. Their good deeds and charities were
countless, and bestowed without ostentation. They will be more highly
appreciated, now that we miss them. Mr. WILLARD will remain for some
time in California.
Mr. B.J. LATZ, also for several years a resident here, will start for
St. Louis on the steamer of the 20th April.
------------------------------------------------
THE FIRST STATION -- M.C. FERGUSON, the clever landlord who has
superintended the Lafayette House (Mok. Hill), since 1852, has bought
out "Uncle John's" place at Big Meadows, on the Big Tree road, and
will open a public house there as soon as the weather settles. It is
one of the best stations on the road.
RICH GULCH HOTEL -- This excellent hotel, kept by Messrs. BEVER &
GRANT, at Rich Gulch, on the main road leading from Mokelumne Hill to
West Point and Carson Valley, has been recently refitted throughout.
The sleeping rooms are large, comfortably furnished and well
ventilated. We can recommend it as a 1st rate place to get a
palatable meal and a good night's rest. Attached to the hotel is a
fine dancing hall, where the youth of the neighborhood frequently
assemble and indulge in the "mazy dance."
BROKE JAIL -- A prisoner in the Mokelumne Hill jail watched his
chances on Sunday night and knocking down Pink SMITH, the jailor,
with a hammer, took the keys of the institution, and without making
any effort to free the other prisoners, precipitately made his
escape. The dogs, which are very savage fellows, were loose in the
outer yard at the time, but were running after some one passing on
the outside of the fence, so that the prisoner was enabled to pass
out unnoticed by them. He was in for horse stealing, and was the
fellow that Mr. THORN brought from Marysville a few weeks since. His
name is Isaac McCULLUM, has a halt in his walk from a shot in the
hip, and escaped without hat or shoes. SMITH was badly hurt.
ROAD MEETING -- A meeting of the Carson Valley and Mok. Hill Wagon
Road Association was held at the court house, Mokelumne Hill, on
Saturday evening last. Reports from the different committees were
read and accepted. The reports gave general satisfaction. A committee
of citizens of the Hill, consisting of Dr. L. SOHER, John P. SHEAR,
Wm. PECK, B.S. LIPPINCOTT and H. ATWOOD were to start on Wednesday
last for the purpose of viewing a road to tap the main trunk of the
Big Tree road; but the weather proving unpropitious, they will await
a favorable change.
SCHOOL at WASHINGTON FLAT -- A common school will be opened at
Washington Flat, near Vallecito, on Monday, 2nd April, under the
superintendence of Mrs. KING, of Angels. The lady is represented as
being well qualified as a teacher. The school will number about 20
pupils to start with.
IMPROVEMENT -- Mr. H. ATWOOD, proprietor of the Union House,
Mokelumne Hill, is making quite an improvement in the lower rooms of
his hotel. The bar and dining rooms are being enlarged, and will be
finished in the finest style.
DISSOLUTION -- The firm of WORDEN & HARKER is dissolved by mutual
consent. All persons indebted to the late firm will make immediate
payment of same.

CO-PARTNERSHIP -- The undersigned have this day entered into
partnership under the style of WOODHAMS & HARKER for the selling of
general merchandise. One of the firm being a resident of San
Francisco, it enables them to offer superior inducements to
purchasers. Give us a call.
