wife of Hiram ALLEN, of a son.
-------------------------------------------------
DIED -- on San Domingo creek, on Tuesday evening, April 10th, 1860,
Daniel GALLAGHER, aged 27 years, a native of Galfin, County Donegal, Ireland.
SUDDEN DEATH -- On Tuesday night as Mr. Daniel GALLAGHER was passing
from Murphys to Angels creek, in company with 1 other person, he
dropped down on the road, saying he was sick. His companion went to
the nearest mining cabin for assistance, and when he returned it was
found that Mr. GALLAGHER was dead. The cause of his death is supposed
to have been heart disease. Deceased was buried according to the
rites of the Catholic Church. The funeral was attended by a large
concourse of citizens. Mr. GALLAGHER has long been a resident in the
vicinity of this place; has been well known as an industrious,
upright and honorable man, and leaves many acquaintances and friends
to mourn his sudden death.

PERSONAL -- Mr. P.W. SCRIBNER, for a number of years a worthy citizen
of Angels, leaves on the steamer of the 20th inst., for a visit of a
few months to his old home in Westchester county, N.Y. Many friends
will welcome him back.
BUTTER -- Mr. Wm. DENNIS of the Willow Creek Mill yesterday presented
us with a roll of nice, fresh butter. He is now making about 75
pounds a day. It is made from fresh milk, the evening's and morning's
milk being put into a churn about the size of a hogshead, and churned
and made up in the cool of the morning.
ANOTHER DUEL at STOCKTON! -- San Joaquin 'Republican' of Thursday
Some days since, a difficulty occurred between 2 gentlemen named
FRANKENTHALL and OPPENHEIMER, in reference to some trivial matter; in
the course of a conversation with a friend about the
misunderstanding, FRANKENTHALL remarked that he would sooner believe
a Chinaman or a negro than he would OPPENHEIMER. This assertion
reaching the ears of Mr. O., a retraction of the offensive language
was demanded, but without success. The only method then left to heal
the wounded honor of Mr. OPPENHEIMER was a challenge to mortal
combat, which was accepted. The whole matter, with reference to the
time, place and weapons to be used, &c., was arranged by mutual
friends. The hour was fixed at 6 o'clock yesterday [Wednesday]
morning; the place in the vicinity of the Asylum; the pistols,
6-shooters - navy size - distance, 12 paces, the parties to be placed
back to back, to wheel and fire at the word.
After 1 round an adjustment of the difficulty was attempted by the
seconds; but Mr. FRANKENTHALL would not unsay what he had asserted. 2
more rounds were had without injury to either party, when another
attempt to adjust the quarrel was made by the seconds. This time they
were successful. FRANKENTHALL now assented that he would believe his
opponent as readily as he would either a Chinamen or a negro. This
statement had the desired effect, and the parties left the field
perfectly satisfied.

LYNCHING -- A man named John O'DONNELL was hung by a mob at Pine
Grove, in Sierra county, on the night of April 2nd. He was charged
with the assassination of Alexander SHIELDS, whom he suspected of
criminal intimacy with his wife. One of the reasons assigned by the
mob for the hanging was the inconvenience of attending court at
Downieville, on the trial of the accused. There can be no
justification for such lawlessness at this period of our history.
