Dear List:
I am trying to find information on my Grandmother, Margaret BRADLEY whose
Death Certificate lists her as being born at San Juan Bautista in January
1877. Her parents are listed on this document as George BRADLEY and
(C)Katherine DONAVAN. She was listed as a resident of the St. John's Convent
and Orphan Asylum in the 1880 Census with the given name of Maggie. Are
there any remaining records of this orphanage remaining that could assist me
in my search? On the San Juan Historical Society Home Page is a picture of a
Nunnery at San Juan. Would this be St. John's which I understand was
destroyed in the 1906 earthquake?
My best guess at this time is that her father died and she was placed in
St. John's as, by 1883 her mother was remarried to a Patrick O'NEILL and was
residing in San Francisco. Margaret's death cert indicates that she resided
in San Francisco from about 1885 until her death in 1928.
I have contacted the cemetery in San Juan and they do not have a listing
for George BRADLEY there, but tell me their records are not complete. Also,
I have checked the online cemetery indexes for San Benito County and do not
find him in any other cemetery. In the online directory records for your
county I found a J. BRADLEY, Farmer, listed as a resident of Hollister.
Could there be a relationship between my George and them?
Any advice or assistance on how to continue my search for information on
my fathers mother would be appreciated.
