Subject: Eli BINGHAM -- San Benito Co. obit
Date: Thu, 28 Feb 2002 14:03:08 -0800
Hi Patrick,
Both of your guys died in Santa Clara Co., right next to San Benito Co.
Here is William's info from Santa Clara Recorder's office, online --
http://www.clerkrecordersearch.org/
Doc# 1300249
DoD: 03/23/1913
Filing Date: NA
Book: K
Page: 249
Name: BINGHAM, WILLIAM
I'm not sure why, but Eli doesn't come up at this site, even though he's
listed in CADI as dying in county 43 (Santa Clara). Try contacting
Perrin, the Santa Clara co. volunteer -- -- for the
DCT's.
I was able to find Eli's obit -- good one, too! I wasn't able to find
William's, but had my time cut short -- I'm going to try again next time.
I'm assuming he must be the father of Eli, as Eli's obit says his
brother, William, is still living.
Obit: Evening Free Lance, Hollister; Tue., Oct. 21, 1919; p. 1:
***Eli BINGHAM Killed by Auto Near Gilroy --
Eli BINGHAM, 60, well known among old Hollister residents, was killed
instantly yesterday on the highway near Gilroy. He was driving a wagon
carrying a load of boxes, when he noticed the load was shifting, jumping
down to rearrange things, he was hit by a passing auto, driven by L.
GUERRA.
The BINGHAM family at one time lived near the school house, on property
now covered by a garage. Elis parents, dead several years, came from
England. His mother was born in the same town as President WILSONs
mother, Carlisle, close to the Scottish border.
Moving to Canada in the early days of the Dominion, Eli, with his sister,
now Mrs. Silas WRIGHT, resident of Salinas, and sister Alice, who kept
house for him many years in the San Juan valley, and his only brother,
William, now residing in San Juan, were all born in a small town in
Ontario, but came to Hollister in their early youth, and became well
known here.
Friends will be surprised and grieved to learn of the tragedy.
Hope this helps,
Dee
