Born -- DUNNING -- at Tres Pinos, Dec. 25, 1901, to the wife of H.H.
DUNNING, a son.
Married -- MOORE-NOBLE -- at the residence of the brides parents, Jan.
1, by Rev. J.W. BRYANT; Abijah P. MOORE and Miss Daisy V. NOBLE.
Died -- EMERY -- at Hollister, Dec. 28, 1901, Sarah Ethel, beloved
daughter of Rev. & Mrs. Jos. EMERY, a native of Oregon, aged 20 years.
[from the Index -- A Sad Death -- resulting from an operation she
underwent the previous Monday for appendicitis clasped the hand of him
who was to have made her his bride within 2 weeks Sarah Ethel EMERY was
next to the youngest daughter of Rev. & Mrs. Joseph EMERY. She was born
in Corvallis, Oregon About 8 years ago her father was stationed in
Salinas as pastor of the M.E. Church, South. Here she received her early
education and since the removal of her parents has made many visits to
her sister in Salinas On Jan. 15, 1902, she was to have been united in
wedlock to William DEANE, a prominent young merchant of Chico The remains
were taken to Salinas last Monday and were interred in the family plot in
the IOOF Cemetery by the side of her sister Bessie, who died some years
ago The fair form of the silent sleeper was enshrouded in the dress which
was intended for her wedding ]
GARNER-DAY Wedding -- On Thursday afternoon, Dec. 26, 1901, at the
residence of the brides parents, Mr.&Mrs. L.V. DAY, at Lone Tree, took
place the wedding of James Wiley GARNER and Miss Edna DAY. The ceremony
was performed by Rev. J.W. BRYANT in the presence of a few near relatives
of the contracting parties
Bernard PERRARO, an aged Portuguese ranch hand, was burned to death in a
fire last Saturday at Henry MILLERs Bloomfield farm, near Gilroy, that
destroyed the ranch blacksmith shop and toolhouse. The victim and 15
other employees were lodging in the upper story of the building, which
was enveloped by the flames so quickly that escape was made with
difficulty, 3 men being partially suffocated. This is the 3rd of a series
of attempts to burn the MILLER property. Loss in this case is $2500.
There is no clew to the incendiary.
Christmas Wedding -- The wedding of Mr. John R. WEEK and Miss Lillian
DUTSCHKE, which took place at the residence of the brides sister, Mrs.
SMITH, in Stockton on Christmas day, was a very pleasant and happy
event the daughter of a well-to-do farmer near Stockton. She was the
recipient of many appropriate presents, among which were a generous check
from her father and a fine piano from her sister. The groom is well known
here He is at present engaged in business in Seattle they will go to
Seattle, their future home
The death of John BERGER, father of Mrs. M.J. ROSS, of this place,
occurred at Santa Rosa last Monday, to which place Mr.&Mrs. ROSS left,
Tuesday, to attend the obsequies.
The will of G.W. BALDWIN, whose death occurred at Aromas Dec. 5, was
filed for probate in the Clerks office this week. The widow, Mrs. C.A.
BALDWIN has petitioned for letters of administration of the estate which
consists of 10 acres of land near Aromas valued at $3600 and about $300
worth of personal property.
>From San Jose Herald -- Edward G. SWAIN, eldest son of Mr.&Mrs. Thos.
SWAIN, of Palo Alto, died at the hospital in San Francisco, where he has
been for some weeks a patient sufferer. The funeral services were held
Sunday at the family residence on Hamilton avenue, after which the
interment took place at Redwood City cemetery. Rev. J.F. JENNESS of the
Methodist Church conducted the funeral service
The funeral of Rev. J.A. PENDEGRAST takes place at Santa Rosa today. For
a number of years he was stationed on the Bear Valley circuit but during
his declining years he has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. J.
TATHAM, of San Jose.

Sweden, aged 65 years.

Mrs. M.J. ROSS, a native of Missouri, aged 65 years.
Died -- PENDEGAST -- at San Jose, Jan. 1, Rev. J.C. PENDEGAST, a native
of Tennessee, aged 79 years.
Died -- HODGES -- in Hollister, Jan. 8, Jackson Lee HODGES, a native of
California, aged 33 years, 11 mos., 25 days.
Died -- HIGUERA -- at Hollister, Jan. 6, Manuel HIGUERA, a native of
California, aged about 52 years.
Duly Honored -- Mr. Wm. P. STEINBECK, formerly Superintendent of the
Victor Mills at this place, has been elected President of the Chamber of
Commerce at Stockton. Accompanying an excellent half ton photograph, the
Stockton Record says: W.P. STEINBECK born in Fitchburg, Mass., in
1865. His residence in California dates from 1875...
Mr. J.A. McALISTER, of Petaluma, was married at Morgan Hill, Santa Clara
County, Monday to Miss Vida THOMPSON, who is a daughter of some prominent
people of the latter place. The groom is a brother of Mrs. C.H. KNAPP of
this place and the bride was a former and popular school teacher of
Sonoma County. Miss Della KNAPP was present at the marriage.
Girobano CHIRGIN, well known and very popular among Slavonian residents
of San Jose, died in that city Thursday at the home of his sister, Mrs.
A.J. PETRONOVITCH after an illness of several months. He was a miner by
occupation and prior to his illness resided for a long time in Amador
county, but was a frequent visitor to San Jose where he had relatives.
Among the latter were Johnnie PETRONOVICH, J.A. CHARGIN and Jerry CHARGIN
of Hollister. The funeral took place at San Jose last Saturday.
While on his way to church at 10 oclock Sunday morning, the Rev. John L.
BURCHARD, one of the oldest Methodist ministers of California, was struck
and instantly killed by an electric car on Telegraph avenue near 16th
St., Oakland. The deceased was ordained a minister at the age of 19 in
Delaware. In the spring of 1860 he came across the plains and settled in
San Francisco. From that time till his retirement he was a leader of the
California Methodist conference. He served in nearly every town or city
of any size in the State His latest charge was the Methodist church in
Santa Rosa, but while there last May his wife died. The old man retained
his commission but a short time, but in September, broken in health and
spirit, came to live in quiet at the home of his son,. Besides Dr.
BURCHARD, left 1 son, Attorney D.W. BURCHARD, of San Francisco, formerly
of San Jose, and 1 daughter, Mrs. C.H. TOMBLEY.

Married -- ABBE-DUNHAM -- in Hollister, Jan. 16, at the residence of Mrs.
Florence WELLS; Andrew ABBE to Mrs. L.A. DUNHAM.
Two marriage licenses were issued this week, one to A.O. AMES and Susan
M. ABBE, and the other to Andrew ABBE and Mrs. L.A. DUNHAM. In the
affidavit to the latter Mr. ABBE states that he is over the age of 21,
and that the prospective bride is over 18 years. The Great Register of
1898 discloses the fact that Mr. ABBE, at that time, had enjoyed 75
summers and as many winters.
Died -- RANKIN -- at San Felipe, Jan. 14, Joseph D. RANKIN, a native of
Prince Edwards Island, aged 52 years.
Died -- SHORT -- near Hollister, Jan. 15, Catherine SHORT, a native of
Tennessee, aged 33 years. [ at the home of her parents, Mr.&Mrs. A.M.
HARDIN, east of town. The deceased was a native of Tennessee but the
greater part of her life was spent here, to which place she came in her
early childhood A few years ago she was married to Dr. SHORT, whose
untimely death cast a gloom on the life of her who now lies cold in
death. The deceased was in ill health for some months past and her death
was not unexpected. The funeral will take place today at 2pm and the
remains will be interred in the Odd Fellows cemetery.]
Died -- GARNER -- in San Jose, Jan. 11, Jose C., beloved husband of
Fidelo C. GARNER and father of Joe GARNER, and stepfather of Benny
CARILLO, a native of Monterey, aged 66 years, 3 mos., 26 days.
Died -- BRYANT -- in San Francisco, Jan. 13, at her residence, 2916 Clay
St., Henrietta Frances BRYANT, widow of the late Dr. B. BRYANT.
Died -- FALLON -- in San Francisco, Jan. 11, Edward Francis, beloved
husband of Abbe FALLON and father of Lillie M. and Godfrey FALLON, a
native of County Roscommon, Ireland. [ Deceased was on his way down
Market street to the Oakland boat and being a little late ran several
blocks to catch the same. Soon after stepping upon the deck of the boat
he fell down exhausted and died while efforts were being made to revive
him. His death is supposed to have been due to heart disease. FALLON was
a resident of this county for several years He owned a tract of several
hundred acres of land north of town, on which he kept a band of race
horses He left here several years ago and at the time of his death, at
the age of 58 years, was in straitened circumstances. He leaves a wife &
2 children.]

Died -- PFEFEILE -- at San Jose, Jan. 21, Alice M. PFEFEILE, a native of
California, aged 23 years. [Deceased was a niece of Mrs. W. JENKINS, of
Hollister.]
Died -- WRIGHT -- in San Francisco, Jan. 23, John W. WRIGHT, a native of
California, aged about 39 years. [John W. WRIGHT, who went to San
Francisco last Tuesday for a few days stay, fell down a flight of stairs
Wednesday night and received injuries from which he subsequently died at
St. Lukes Hospital. About midnight the deceased was ascending the stairs
and had almost reached the top when he missed his footing and tumbled
backward down the entire flight. He lay in an unconscious condition at
the foot of the stairs and when picked up and taken to St. Lukes
Hospital it was found that he had sustained a fracture of the skull the
eldest son of John WRIGHT of this place The remains were brought to
Hollister for interment.] [from 31 Jan issue -- The funeral of John W.
WRIGHT last Saturday was largely attended most of his life was spent in
this community Services were held at the Catholic Church, from which
place the remains were taken to the Catholic cemetery for interment. He
was the eldest son of John WRIGHT, one of the leading farmers of this
place, to whom his death was a sad blow. Besides the aged father, 2
sisters, Mrs. G.F. MUDER and Mrs. J.H. LYNN, and 6 brothers are left to
mourn his loss.]
In the decree of distribution of the estate of Emily JACOBS, deceased,
the property of which consists of about 180 acres of land in Cienega and
a small amount of personal property, was distributed to the heirs, shard
and share alike. The heirs are Ada A. HAWKINS, Louisa C. JACOBS, Ethel E.
KING, Maggie B. JACOBS and Chas. E. JACOBS.
Mrs. Encarnacion COOPER, sister of the late General Mariano G. VALLEJO,
and wife of the late Captain J.B.R. COOPER, a pioneer of 1823, died last
week at her home in San Francisco, aged 93 years. She was born at
Monterey, Mar. 25, 1809. For many years her home was the center of social
life in the old Capital of the State.
Guadalupe PACHECO has applied for letters of administration of the estate
of Antonio PACHECO, deceased. The property consists of 160 acres of land
in the Vallecitos, and is valued at $320.
A decree of distribution of the estate of Jose I. ROSE, deceased, has
been entered, and the property of the estate has been devised to the
heirs. The real property consists of 413 acres in the Lone Tree district.
George L. BLACK, a native of Canada, was admitted to citizenship in the
Superior Court, last Monday, on the testimony of J.R. GRUBB and Gilmore
AGNEW.
Mrs. M. CASTRO, wife of Joaquin CASTRO, died at Gilroy last week. Mrs.
CASTRO was 96 years old and a native of California. Mr.&Mrs. CASTRO were
probably the oldest married couple in the State, having lived together
for nearly 80 years. They had several generations of children, grand
children and great grand children.

Died -- WARE -- in Hollister, Jan. 26, Sydney Johnston WARE, a native of
California, aged 30 years, 9 months. [Mr.&Mrs. E. HARLAN, of Watsonville,
were here this week attending the funeral obsequies of S.J. WARE, brother

Died -- TOMAS -- near Emmet, Jan. 29, Manuel THOMAS [spelled 2 ways], a
native of Azores, aged about 47 years. [Manuel TOMAS, a farmer living
near Emmet, had his back broken last Wednesday by being thrown from a
saddle horse. He was driving cattle at the time and it is supposed that
the horse shied throwing him off with the above result ]
Domingo F. MACHADO, a native of Portugal, was admitted to citizenship on
the testimony of Geo. OLIVERA and J.R. GRUBB.
Dorson WILLSON, one of the oldest pioneers of the southern end of the
Santa Clara valley, died last Monday night at his home in Old Gilroy
after a protracted illness. Deceased was 77 years of age. He came with
his 2 brothers, Horace and Albert, to Gilroy in 1853 and with a short
intermission, has resided continuously in that valley since. Deceased was
the father of Mrs. G.A. SAWYER, of San Felipe, and brother of Dan
WILLSON, of San Juan.
