Mr. Eldridge G. OAKES, an old and highly respected resident of
Bitterwater, died suddenly Monday at the home of his sister, Mrs. Samuel
SAWYER, at the above place, the cause of his death supposed to be heart
trouble. Mr. OAKES was born in Bangor, Maine, and came to California in
1863. He was an expert engineer and for a number of years was in the
employ of the Central Pacific Railroad company. He had been a resident of
this county for the past 25 years, and at the time of his death he was a
partner of his brother-in-law, S. SAWYER, engaged in farming and cattle
raising at Bitterwater.
Lucas ESPINOSA, a Mexican wood chopper, committed suicide at Chittendens,
near Sargents station, Tuesday morning, by placing the muzzle of a shot
gun in his mouth and blowing the whole front of his head off. His brother
in San Jose, on learning of the tragedy, sent word to Coroner HOPCROFT,
with instructions to attend and give the body a decent burial, thinking
at the time that it was his mother who was dead. His solicitation in the
matter is attributed to a life insurance of a few hundred dollars in the
name of his mother, made payable to him, and when he learned that it was
his brother and not his mother that was dead he became very indignant.
What promised to be a decent funeral was declared off and the remains of
the dead man were consigned to a paupers grave.
At New Madrid, Mo., on Sunday night a crowd of masked men overpowered the
jailor and took a Negro, Louis WRIGHT, a short distance from town and
hanged him. Richard and Pringles Negro minstrels gave an entertainment
there Saturday night, when a dispute arose between one of the musicians
and some of the white town boys. Several of the boys undertook to take
the musicians out, when the Negroes on the stage began to shoot. Several
in the audience were hit. The Negroes ran out the back way to their
private car, which was soon surrounded by armed men. All the Negroes were
put in jail and as the result of an examination the name of one who did
the shooting was discovered. He was lynched and the others will be
released. Several of the prisoners were badly beaten Saturday night. The
above troupe gave an exhibition here some months ago and their behavior
was something awful
