**7 Mar issue --
Died -- WOOD -- at San Juan, Mar. 3, John H. WOOD, native of Maine, aged
60 years.

Died -- HAWKINS -- at Hollister, Mar. 5, Hazel, daughter of Mr.&Mrs. W.E.
HAWKINS, a native of California, aged 9 years, 5 mos., 16 days. [The
death of Hazel, only daughter of Mr.&Mrs. W.E. HAWKINS, Wednesday
evening, was a sad event and the parents have the sympathy of the entire
community. Death was the result of an operation performed Thursday for
appendicitis and while but little encouragement was given for her
recovery everything was done for the patient and the skillful attention
of the attending physicians proved of no avail. The operation was
performed by Dr. F.E. BAILEY, of San Francisco, assisted by Drs. O’BANNON
and TEBBETTS of this place. The physicians gave but little hopes from the
beginning and notified the parents and relatives to be prepared for the
worst. The little girl, 9 years of age, was the pride of the household,
of a cheerful and happy disposition and the place left vacant by her
premature death can never be filled. Death is always sad, but the loss of
the flower of the family is inexpressibly so. The funeral will take place
from the residence of T.S. HAWKINS today at 11 o’clock a.m.]

deceased sustained an injury to his right leg, resulting in an aneurism.
He suffered from the injury right along, but recently it was aggravated
by getting a rope caught around the limb, whilst endeavoring to tie a
young calf in the barn. The injury became so painful that an operation
was decided upon, but deceased was too far gone to recover from the
shock…universally respected. A quiet, inoffensive, upright man…He leaves

recovered and during all his illness but little hopes were entertained
for his recovery. Deceased had been a resident of this county for several
years and at one time was the proprietor of the hotel at Paicines and
also conducted the general merchandise store at that place. The past few
