Death Takes Long-Time S.J. Teacher
Death Wednesday claimed Miss Mary A. McDonald, 94, who until her retirement
about 20 years ago had been a San Jose school tacher half a century. For
many years she had taught at San Jose Normal School, now San Jose State
College.
Miss McDonald had made her home at 410 W. San Fernando St. for 30 years
with a sister, Mrs. Ella C. Graham. She died there following a long period
of poor health. She was born in San Jose.
She was a member of Retired Teachers Association, Santa Clara County Pioneer
Society and was a past president of San Jose Institute, 32, YLI.
Miss McDonald spend her childhood on the old McDonald estate on Locust
St. purchased in 1867 by her father and mother, Thomas and Elizabeth White
McDonald. it had formerly been a part of the Noreaga family's Spanish land
grant holdings.
Before they built their home, the McDonalds rebought the place three times
until a city clearance of title made it undisputedly theirs.
In addition to the sister with whom she lived, Miss McDonald is survived
by two other sisters, Mrs. Sophie Ryan and Mrs. Clara A. Gairaud, and a
niece, E. Marie Ryan, all of San Jose.
Funeral services will be from W.B. Ward Co. at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow followed
by requiem mass in St. Joseph's Church at 9 a.m. Interment will be in Santa
Clara Catholic Cemetery. Rosary will be recited at the chapel at 8 tonight.
McDONALD - In San Jose, Calif, May 14, 1952, Mary A. McDOnald, beloved
daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas McDonald; dear sister of Mrs.
Ella C. Graham, Mrs. Sopie Ryan, both of San Jose, and the late John C.,
Charles A., Joseph A., and Thomas B. McDonald and Mrs. Clara A. Gairaud;
devoted aunt of E. Marie Ryan of San Jose; a native of San Jose, aged 94
years. A member of the Retired Teachers Association, Santa Clara County
Pioneer Society and past president of the San Jose Institute No. 32, YLI.
Funeral services tomorrow, Sat., May 17, 1952, from the funeral chapel
of the W.B. Ward Co. (Mrs. Dan Gray and Ralph Gray), North Market and Devine
Sts., at 8:30 a.m., thence to St. Joseph's Church, where requiem mass will
be celebrated, commencing at 9:00 a.m. Santa Clara Catholic Cemetery.
The Rosary will be recited at the funeral chapel this evening at 8 o'clock.
