"Turk" Bedolla Dies; SCU Hall of Famer
(With 1962 Picture)

Santa Clara - Ernest "Turk" Bedolla, one the first former Bronco athletes
to be elected to the University of Santa Clara Athletic Hall of Fame, died
Tuesday at the age of 74.

Bedolla, who starred in baseball, football and track for the university,
was described by major league scout Joe Devine as the best baseball player
he had ever found.

But Bedoll's virtuous Swiss mother, put off by the image of baseball players
as tabacco-chewing drunken bums, wouldn't let her son play professionally.

A centerfielder, Bedolla always hit in the high 300's.

A halfback in the single wing days when the half-back was a triple threat
running behind the blocking of the quarterback; he once threw a 65-yeard
touchdown pass.

In track, he was a dash man, but was versatile enough to win a pentathlon
in an Olympic tryout.

He was SCU student body president as a senior in 1925, went on to the SCU
law school and became a plice judge in Salinas.

His parents ran a Chualar dairy, which Bedolla converted to a produce ranch
when the depression hit. He farmed for 25 years, moving to Santa Clara
when he retired. He lived at 1174 Inverness St.

Two sons followed in their father's footsteps, lettering in baseball at
the university. Ernest Bedolla is head of the Union Carbide Agricultural
Division and Charles Bedolla, who was the University baseball coach for
a time, operates a property management company in San Jose.

A daughter, Priscilla Blythe, is the wife of a Santa Barbara dentist. There
are 15 grandchildren.

The Mass of Christina Burial will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday at the
Mission Chapel on the campus of the university. Burial will be in Santa
Clara Catholic Cemetery.
