Subject: [CASCLARA] Santa Clara Helps for Death Certificates
Date: Sat, 7 Jul 2001 14:02:17 -0500
This was sent to me by some nice People to help me get a death Certificate
on a relative.
The Santa Clara City Library does not have the San Jose Mercury News, the
newspaper of record for obituaries in Santa Clara County as far back as
1971. Here are your options for obtaining an obituary:
Contact the San Jose Public Library which does have the microfilm of this
newspaper back to the 1870s. They have an "ASK A LIBRARIAN" online service
and may be willing to search for this for you. Here is web address of San
Jose Public Library:
http://www.sjpl.lib.ca.us/
or:
The California State Library in Sacramento has microfilm of all the major
newspapers in California and is willing to lend the microfilm to other
public libraries. So you could go to your local public library and ask them
to request an "Interlibrary Loan" of the Nov-Dec microfilm of the San Jose
Mercury for 1971 from the California State Library, P.O. Office Box 942837,
Sacramento, CA 94237-0001.
or:
For a fee the Santa Clara County Historical & Genealogical Society will do
an obituary check for you but you must correspond with them via regular
postal mail, including a letter and self-addressed stamped envelope. They
get several requests like this a week so their response is not fast,
particularly when our Library (where there office is located) does not own
the microfilm. Take a look at their website:
http://www.katpher.com/SCCHGS/
It is also helpful to fill out and print off their request for research
assistance form and send it with your letter and SASE. The form can be
found online at:
http://www.katpher.com/SCCHGS/form.htm
FYI, in case you would also want the death cerficate for Preston McMillan,
that can be ordered from the Santa Clara County Recorder's Office. See
information about this at their website at:
http://www.clerkrecorder.org/death.htm
Hope this information is helpful.
