Hi Sue,
I see a couple of problems....VITALCHEK has probably 'sewed up' the whole
state since a person can order through them for ALL of the state (if not
all the nation). Knowing government, the folks at the recorders office
probably can't make the decision whether to use a local person or
VITALCHEK. I imagine you can WRITE and submit a proposal to the county and
it will make it's way through the bureaucratic maze...but probably
ultimately be denied.
I am also a local person with genealogical interest in the Santa Clara
County. I do death and marriage cert transcriptions FOR FREE...as my
schedule allows. I also will purchase the cert if someone really wants it
and send it to them. They pay for the cert of course...but I can get it
done quickly if need be. Most folks only want the information, so the free
transcription is good enough for them....especially since most folks
genealogy budgets are limited.
So....I suppose you can advertise in local newspapers, in genealogical
publications, put your card or information about your website at the
historical museum (if they will allow that), contact all the local
historical societies to let them know about your service, or direct folks
to your website like this e-mail has done....although the rootsweb lists
frown on advertising a service for a fee.
Good luck
Perrin
