DEATH OF JOHN CONROY
The death of John Conroy in Oakland, February 2nd marks the passing of a
real Los Gatos pioneer, one of the sturdy men who founded a home in the
virgin wilderness with its hardships and trials that brought out the metal
of the man. The late Mr Conroy was but 19 years old when he left his
birthplace in Kings County, Ireland, sailing around Cape Horn, to the new
country that promised so much to the man of clean courage, though courage
and his physical vigor constitute his chief capital. In 1852 he first came
to Los Gatos, where he was engaged in teaming, hauling all the stone for the
construction of the old mill (put up by Mr Forbes) from the Tisdale
quarry, opposite the old Ditto place. He went to Santa Clara, where he
remained about seven years in the employ of Mr Kennedy (for whom our Kennedy
Road is named), on what was known as the Stockton Ranch. Mr Conroy returned
to Los Gatos, continuing in his connection with Mr Kennedy, and in 1861 he
took up government land adjoining the Kennedy grant. Here he established
his home, marrying shortly after acquiring his grant, and with his pioneer
wife met and conquered the daily difficulties of life as they presented
themselves. Seven boys and three girls were born and grew to manhood and
womanhood, and in turn left the home to branch our for themselves, and the
ranch passed into their hands.
