Last Stanford cattle ranch closes
Sept 5, 2005
By Lisa M. Krieger
KNIGHT RIDDER
Stanford's last roundup was held at daybreak Monday, when the animals
remaining on the historic 1,200-acre Piers Ranch were loaded into
trailers to be hauled away.
Roger Piers' father, Manuel, founded Piers Dairy, grazing 200 cattle in
what is now midtown Palo Alto and delivering milk twice daily by horse
and buggy. Piers' family has grazed cattle on land leased from the
university since 1927.
At its peak, the family held a 2,500-acre lease of the Stanford expanse,
from Page Mill Road to Arastradero Road and from Portola Road to
Junipero Serra Boulevard.
It's the expense, and all the new rules, that told Roger Piers it was
time to go.
"They say: 'You can't do this, you can't do that.' And they don't know
what the hell they're talking about," he said.
The Pierses are moving to the Sierra Nevada town of Cool, where they
have 12 acres of hills, creeks and redwoods.
"I'll tell you the truth: I'm darned glad to get out," Piers said. "We
used to have fun, but now it's cutthroat. This land here, it's worth too
much."
