Subject: KEPLER'S -------GOING OUT OF BUSINESS?- Say It Isn't So~!
Date: Sun, 11 Sep 2005 14:11:02 -0700
I was saddened to hear the first report that Kepler's was going to close
its doors.-forever~
Kepler's Books--the first book store I haunted, has just celebrated 50
years in business and then suddenly announced they were closing-
Former employees of Kepler's started another favorite book store,
Printer's Inc. in Palo Alto- It is now closed.
A large movement of investors and community support is trying to put a
plan in place to save this icon in Menlo Park........
So much interest has been generated that there is a blog spot on the
subject

And a lengthy article in the SF Chron..
here are some snippets from the complete article
Because of their efforts, Clark Kepler -- who took the reins from his
now-deceased father, Roy, the peace activist who founded the store in
1955 -- has postponed filing for bankruptcy.
In honor of the store's 50th anniversary this year, a Palo Alto Online
article -- called "How Kepler's Changed the World" -- put it this way:
"Jerry Garcia needed musical compatriots. Joan Baez needed a mentor,
peace activists needed teachers and right-wingers needed an enemy. One
way or another, they all found what they were looking for at Kepler's."
"Kepler's has always been more than just a store," said state Sen. Joe
Simitian, D-Palo Alto, a customer since the 1960s. "It has been a venue
for the free expression of ideas in an engaged community. That's no
small thing."
Another Kepler's fan, Neil Sofman -- the owner of A Clean Well Lighted
Place for Books in San Francisco, who did some time behind Kepler's
counter himself years ago -- asks: "Do you prefer Main Street to Chain
Street?"
