Thursday, October 12, 1893
Cha's Merrill was in town last Monday.
Jake Faust is at work in surface diggins near Yreka.
Basil Talbot was been installed as foreman of Shanklin's Meadow Ranch in
Grasshopper Valley.
C.W. Perkiss, John H. Perkiss and Webb Calavan have located mining claims
and water rights near Yreka, Siskiyou Co.
Anton Gerig and Sam Watson returned from their cattle drive last Thursday.
Billy, a brother of Anton, came up with them.
Randolph Crowley and family departed for Healdsburg, Sonoma Co., last
Sunday. Randolph will return shortly while his family expect to remain
below all winter.
E.S. Shanklin was in from Grasshopper valley Friday and while here purchased
a six-horse load of ground barley and other supplies which he shipped to the
Meadow Ranch.
Mrs. T.W. Wilson narrowly escaped a very serious accident last Sunday. Her
dress caught fire while she was cooking, but fortunately she escaped with a
few slight burns on the hands.
Charley Gerig took a large load of wheat to the Adin mill yesterday.
C.H. Manning, the postmaster of Fall River Mills, was in the valley
yesterday.
Marion Kesselring was on our streets yesterday bound for his Widow Valley
ranch.
ADIN DOTS
R.B. Clark and his son Carl left for the east last Sunday.
Our school teacher, Mr. Null, has moved into the Nebeker house.
Mrs. Routson and Miss Antha Smith have gone to Alturas for a few days, where
Mrs. R. expects to dispose of some millinery.
AN ONLY DAUGHTER
The above play will be produced for the benefit of the church by the Big
Valley Dramatic Troupe in Bieber Town Hall on the evening of October 24th,
with the following cast of characters:

James Tuttle - A.W. McKenzie
Charles Forrest - J.T. Boyd
Nick Brown - R.M. Rankin
Sallie Simmons - Lottie Jack

The play is in three acts and between the acts there will be other
attractions.
At the close of the performance, a beautiful silk crazy quilt will be
offered as a prize, the drawing to take place the same evening.
The price of admission will be twenty-five cents.
Mrs. D.R. Brownell and Mrs. Ima Packwood visited Adin yesterday.
An eclipse of the sun took place last Monday. About one half of the sun's
disk was obscured.
The Millville Times says that J.M. Bassett fell from a step ladder while
putting up a stove last Saturday and sprained his arm.

L. Kramer returned from his cattle drive last week.
John T. Gibbins is able to be around again without the aid of crutches.
Chas. H. Merrill went below last week to look after a winter range for his
cattle.
W. H. Woodmansee has move his family to his ranch about two miles north of
here.
James Marcus, of Lookout, called in to see us yesterday. He is helping Jim
Snell gathering cattle.
T. P. Hockman, of Egg Lake, and Anton Gasper and Joe August, of Pitville
were in Susanville this week on land business.
Ben Studley Frank Studley, J. S. McCuisten and Johnny Ahern passed here
Tuesday with a band of 160 head of beef cattle which they are taking to
Cottonwood.
Bud Hatton started a large drove of hogs to San Francisco last Saturday
which he purchased in this valley. Tom Dunlap is superintending the drive
and it will be three weeks before his return.
Miss Nettie and Etta Vineyard, who have been visiting Mrs. Frank Moss,
returned to Fall River last Friday accompanied by R.M. Rankin. The young
ladies recently passed a successful examination at Alturas for teaching
certificates.
Miss Lena Ranklin is visiting in Fall River Valley.
I.B. Parrish, of Willow Creek, was in town last Friday.
Louis Kramer has bought 80 head of beef cattle from Tom Talbot, of Adin.
Charley and Walter Holcomb returned from the Greenville Fair last Friday.
A.H. Waller went to Grasshopper last week, he is employed on Shanklin's
Meadow Ranch.
W.G. and R.M. Ranklin have purchased the Randolph Crowley place, on the west
side, and will make it their future home.
Lewis M. Eades was down from Gonger Neck last Friday. Mr. Eades informs us
that he has a large apple crop this year and that he intends to dry his
whole crop.
The residence of B. E. Shumway, near Horse Lake, was destroyed by fire on
October 9th. None of the contents were saved. The loss is estimated
$8,000, insurance $2,000.
The Supreme Court has reversed the judgment of the Superior Court of Lassen
Co. in the mortgage foreclosure case of the Bank of Shasta Co. vs James T.
Boyd and remanded the cause for a new trial.
The trial of E. Lauer, of Alturas, for selling whiskey without a license
took place before Justice Wilson, in Adin, last week. The jury found Mr.
Lauer guilty and he was fined $100. The case will, no doubt, be appealed.
Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Gooch, of Lookout, Modoc county, are visiting Mrs.
Boatman. The visitors have many friends in this country, Mr. Gooch at one
time being a popular resident of this county. They will be here about two
weeks. - Red Bluff News.
Geo. W. Elliott, of Lookout, was in our berg yesterday.
Andrew Summers returned from Colusa County, last Friday.
S.T. Eldridge, of Fall River, will be in this valley in about two weeks to
buy hogs; he will want them to weigh from 125 pounds up.
Fred Hines, Wm. Scholl and John Cahlan bought 375 head of beef cattle in
this valley; they will feed them in Honey Lake valley for winter beef.
A.J. Eades and Tom Eades, of Gouger Neck, were down Sunday. Andy says he
just returned from Red Bluff and finds it fully as lively here in Bieber as
he did in the lower contry.
LOOKOUT MUSINGS
James Crowley Sr. has been appointed school trustee of Egg Lake Dist. By
Supt. Vergon.
A.E. Downing and his sister will move to town Saturday and will occupy the
Trainor dwelling.
Johnny Minder, who has spent the last two or three years at Silver Lake, was
in town Tuesday.
Ira S. Cannon will leave Sunday for Alturas where he will act as witness in
final proof of J.B. Morgan.
James Hewitt and Pashal Abernathy left for the lower country last Monday.
They expect to go as far down as Marysville before returning.
Theodore Renner, W.O. Hill, John Johnson, A.N. Hurlbut and Ed Kennedy were
in town from Stone Coal country Sunday and Monday.
Milan Stewart, formerly deputy assessor of this county, returned a few days
ago from Solano Co. where he has resided the last two or three years. He
says times are hard below.
Anton Gerig and Louis Kramer were here again last week buying cattle. These
gentlemen are welcome guests and the Lookout country as the best beef in the
country as buyers well know.
L. C. Carpenter, who has been down in the coast counties prospecting the
creamery business, returned a few days ago and reports times very dull
everywhere except in the immediate vicinity of the creameries.
Isaac Hastings, who left for Redding last week with his summer's production
of butter, writes from there that he has to ship his butter to San Francisco
as he cant sell a pound of it in Redding. He will load back for Read &
Morris.
