These are taken from a register "Affidavits of Labor and improvements on
Mining Claims" for Shasta Co., CA

After about 1890 companies or individuals were permitted to file a mining
claim on public land such as Forest Service or BLM controlled public
lands. They were allowed to live and mine on the claim so long as they
proved that they were performing a minimum amount of work in mining or in
improvements. This yearly certification is filed at the respective court
house and is referred to as "proof of labor". Until recent years,
individuals could receive a "Patent" on the land from the government if
they stayed and worked and improved the land for a given amount of time.

The first column will be either the mine owner or the person filing the
affidavit. I don't know where you would find more info on these.

I will get these on my website sometime but there are 6 books and I have
only finished the second one. So they will not be posted until I get them
all done.
