Today is Saturday, Aug. 11 2001. On this date:
1901: A woman wielding a shotgun in north Redding fired at a grape thief in
her husband's vineyard. It was assumed the thief was not hurt because he
was not found. The woman was also responsible for shooting a thief
stealing a chicken.
1951: The governor announced the appointment of Richard B. Eaton, 36, as
Shasta County's second Superior Court judge. He'd been acting as such for
several months and would officially take office Sept. 23.
1976: Following a recent dedication and opening of the new Memorial
Hospital building in Redding, workers began tearing down the old wing of
the hospital. Officials said the area was being cleared for use as a
parking lot.
1991: A gas station employee was assaulted by a man who demanded money
after pointing what might have been a water pistol at the worker. The
cashier noticed a possible rubber plug in the back of the gun and refused
to give the man any cash. The man punched the gas station employee but left
empty handed.

Today is Monday, Aug. 13, 2001. On this date.
1901: Squabbling over a game of cards, Matt Young, a miner and squaw man,
came at R.W. Wallace with a butcher knife at a saloon in Cinnabar, a remote
mining camp northwest of Redding. Wallace then shot and killed Young.
1951: A member of the pioneering family and namesake of McArthur died in
San Francisco at age 80. In honor of his parents, Frank McArthur gave the
McArthur-Burney park to the state.
1976: Workers were constructing a new classroom for the Shasta County Jail.
State standards required a classroom for prisoners. Instructors from Shasta
College were to give classes at the jail in basic education.
1991: A 34-year-old Redding woman was killed while watching television in
her home when a truck crashed through her living room. The 50-year-old
driver was charged with suspicion of drunken driving and vehicular
manslaughter.

Today is Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001. On this date:
1901: Three Holt & Gregg Co. brick building projects were delayed. This
included the work on the four-story Lorenz Hotel. Carpenters were waiting
on lumber to complete work needed before workers could lay bricks on the
basement of the hotel.
1951: A crashed airplane found by a couple while mining on the Trinity
River turned out to be the 20-year-old wreckage of a monoplane belonging to
Art Kercher who used to fly to a summer home on Coffee Creek. Kercher had
crashed the plane during takeoff from the Carrville landing strip and it
had been discarded.
1976: A man with two loaded pistols who threatened employees and held them
hostage for 20 minutes at the U.S. Bureau of Land Management office in
Redding surrendered without firing a shot. He was angry over a mining
claim but was talked out of the threat when police surrounded the building.
1991: A citizens' proposal to study the idea of creating a single high
school for southern Siskiyou County was being discussed at a district
trustees meeting. The idea was to combine McCloud, Mount Shasta and Weed.

Today is Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2001. On this date.
1901: The body of Owen Murphy, a drill sharpener who drowned in turbulent
waters of the Sacramento River, was anchored to the shore but left in the
river as per the wishes of the deceased brother. The coroner decided it was
the best way to preserve the body.
1951: Three of several fires being fought in Shasta County had suspicious
origins. The largest of the fires possibly started by arson had burned
more than 1,000 acres.
1976: Storm damage estimates were higher than expected after a weekend
storm dumped at least 4.65 inches of rain on Redding. Cleanup continued
into the week after a Twin View Boulevard sewer plant overflowed, and 28
people were left homeless due to heavy damage of their apartments.
1991: A man was hit by lightning while hiking Lassen Peak. The 41-year-old
Oakland resident suffered broken ribs and eardrums and burned hair.
