-------------------------------

After a lingering illness William R. Thomas passed away at his home on
Orchard street in this city last evening about 9:30 o'clock.

Mr. Thomas was well and favorably known. He came to America from Cornwall,
England, during the Civil War and located in this state. After a residence
here of several years he returned to his native land and spent some time
there, but the desire to be among the gold-fields of California overcame
his love for the old home and thirty-five years ago again found himself
in this state and has since remained here. He followed the occupation of
a miner and for twelve years resided in Sierra City. Fourteen years ago
he removed to Nevada City and established his home in this place. In his
chosen occupation Mr. Thomas was successful and was well-informed on the
subject of gold mining. Of late he has been a sufferer from miners' consumption
but manly struggled to conquer his affliction and last night Death entered
and claimed him.

William R. Thomas was a man of sterling worth. An honest and upright citizen,
his friends esteemed him for his integrity and manly principles. The family
have the sympathy of the community.

To mourn his death are left a widow, two sons, William and Sidney Thomas
of this city, two daughters, Mrs. John Thomas of Sierra City and Mrs. Nicholas
Cavern {Keverne} of Jackson, Amador county. The date of the funeral has
not been set, but it will be held at Sierra City under the auspices of
Court Pride of the Sierras A. O. F., of which he was a member.
