Colleen:

I can assure you that the Mountain Messenger is still being published. I
believe it is the oldest continuously published newspaper in the west (?) -
since the 1850s. It's a weekly now and their office is in Downieville, Sierra
County. I've been there many times.

They have some original newspapers (? if back to 1994) - the rest are on
microfilm. The newspaper has an old microfilm reader in their office - it's
old but it works, and when I've asked for an issue the staff have been very
accommodating. (I do believe the state library has the microfilm also.)
Since you have a date of death, I'll bet you can find an obituary. If you
didn't have a specific date of death it would be harder to find. DCs are good
for confirming the death date.

The Sierra County Clerk-Recorder's office in Downieville (at the courthouse)
has birth, marriage, and death records going back to the 1850s-1860s. If you
are certain he died in Sierra County, the Recorder's office should have a copy
of the death certificate. You can also get it from the state (if you're not
certain in which county he died) but you'll wait several weeks or even months
for it. The counties are almost always faster. The DC will give quite a bit
of information, including the date of birth/death, place of burial, etc.

If you haven't, check out the Sierra County, CA GenWeb site at:
http://www.cagenweb.com/sierrcty.htm I have a lot more information that
I hope to post to the site within the next month.

Good luck.
