For immigration answers, you need to do census work - the 1900 census asks
"year of immigration to US, # of years in US, naturalization" and if they
were still alive in 1920, asks "year of immigration to US, naturalized or
alien, year of naturalization"

Have you visited this site? It is an index of all the names in the CA
county biographies published late 1880s/early 1900s and available at the CA
Room of the state library in Sacramento. There's a search feature and it
tells you how to order copies if you find one of your names.
