To Bonnie in San Rafael CA mailto:

I have copied your request and quite a bit more. The NDGW pages I copied had
many apparent errors but I have tried to correct them to align with the
vital statistics information. You will have figure it out for yourself.
Perhaps you have more information that will make sense of all of the
conflicting dates.

Highlights:
S. T. DAKEN, well-known artist of Santa Rosa, was born in Bunker Hill,
Macoupin County, IL in 1876. He was the son of Henry and Deluska (WEEKS)
DAKEN, natives of Canada and St. Louis MO, respectively.

As a child, he came to CA with his parents and the family settled first in
Sacramento.
At the age of nine he began to learn the trade of decorator and fresco
painter, following this in San Francisco for many years. He devoted his
entire time to painting and sketching, opening a studio on Van Ness avenue
in San Francisco.
As a result of the earthquake and fire, he removed to Glen Ellen Sonoma
County and then to Santa Rosa where he opened an art studio. He conducted
classes there until he took the position as an art instructor at Ursuline
College.
He was married in 1904 and is the father of two children, Edna May and
Sidney T. (notation from NDGW says Sidney was also an artist) However,
obituary says he was survived by two daughters. Sidney could be a male or
female name.

Samuel Tilden DAKIN died of cancer at age 59 in Georgetown, El Dorado
County, on May 3 1935.
His obituary notes he was born in June, 187.. It lists him as a native of
Massachusetts, well-known San Francisco and Mill Valley submarine artist. In
1926 his work was praised in a story and illustration of him was published
in a magazine of nationwide circulation. His landscape paintings were
studied by a group of scientists in Washington DC.
He was survived by his wife, two daughters and two brothers.
