Robert Bradley Cannon was born on Oct. 9, 1828 in Wayne Co., IL He died in St. Helena, Napa Co., CA on Feb. 14, 1900. In 1861 he married Nancy Ellen Owen b.Carthage, Hancock Co., IL on May 3, 1833 she died sometime between 1901-18 in a shipwreck.
He went to California in 1849, going directly to the mines in Tuolumne County. In 1851 he went to Suisun and settled on a ranch two miles east of town owned by Mrs. G. H. Field.
He afterwards gave up farming and purchased the Suisun Livery Stables. He continued in that business until 1870, when he sold out to Sammarit Wilson. Once more he took up farming. Forming a partnership with F.O. Staples, the "Cannon Station," ranch of 1000 acres was purchased and a general grain and stock farm was successfully conducted for eight years.
In 1878 Mr. Cannon disposed of all his interests there and went to Santa Rosa, purchasing a vineyard in Bennett Valley, near that city. In 1886 he purchased the Santa Rosa Republican, which was successfully edited during the next four years by his son, Richard. After a residence of twelve years in Sonoma County, Robert's health began to fail, and he went to Texas.
He went there with his family in 1890 and invested in a stock ranch, which he owned at the time of his death
He spent the years before his death traveling in and around Oregon and California. He settled in St. Helena, Napa Co., CA in 1898.
The ranch in Texas was run during his absence by his brother Cornelius T. Cannon who died there in Pearsall, TX in 1892. Later Robert's son took up ranching in TX. Robert had 4 brothers, Cornelius, Bolivar Rolen, William Grey and Elam S. He also Had a sister Mrs. Alzada Grove/Groves.
Robert and Ellen had 4 children:
Richard Douglas Cannon b.Aug. 12, 1862 in Suisun, Solano Co., CA d.Sonoma Co., CA Mar.29, 1939 mar. 1886 Mary Margaret "Shade" Bishop b.Sonoma Co., CA July, 30, 1864 d.San Francisco, CA May 6, 1944. Richard was a newspaper editor, he worked in Santa Rosa, CA, Salt Lake City, UT and Portland, OR over the years at different papers.
(They had two daughter's Margaret "Margie", also known as Marjorie and Eleanor. The latter married a well known California cartoonist whose last name was MacDonald. He was known as "Mac".)
Stella Minerva Cannon b.Suisun, Solano Co., CA May 1865 d.Colusa Co., CA Feb. 26, 1919 She was a music teacher. She never married.
Robert Eugene Cannon b.Suisun, Solano Co., CA May 1867 He was a newspaper man and cattle rancher. As of 1900 he was married and living in Kinney Co., TX. His wife was Roxie L. Walker b.TX Aug 1870, the widow of Frederick Woodward. She had a daughter Freddie Woodward b. July 1895 by her first marriage. Roxie and Robert also had a son together named Robert Cannon b. Jun 1899. They may have later had a son name Hugh, also. Both of Roxie's marriages took place in Frio Co., TX.
Louis Owen Cannon, Robert and Ellen youngest child was a newspaper man. b. Sept 1876 in CA d.San Francisco, CA Nov. 17, 1935. He married a woman named Anita b.NY Aug. 4, 1879 d.Napa Co., CA Nov. 3, 1971. They aren't believed to have had any children.
