Still searching for Johnnie Castillo (sic?)...his name "sounded" like
Costello but was spelled differently. He married Amanda (Amanda born
l855). She was married previously so we are not sure of the name under
which she got married to Johnnie; nor in which order as she was married
5 times. Other married names were Pangburn, Smith, Brown and Pierce
under which she died in l92l in Corvallis, Oregon. Amanda was
reportedly from Michigan/Indiana and was definately in Oregon/Washington
areas in l874 when her daughter, Mary Ellen (May) was born. They lived
in an Indian encampment near Cottage Grove around l880. Records shows a
land grant for Castillo located at the corner properties of Brown and
Johnson. Amanda's maiden name was either Johnson (per her daughter,
Flora (Belle) Duel or White, as shown on her death certificate; her
father shown as Jesse White. Most (if not all) of her husbands were
Native American. Children born under the Smith and Brown names were
Jennie, Sherman, George, Flora Belle and Mariah. Mary Ellen, born in
l874, who might be his daughter went under the name of Pangburn (whom
she hinted was not her real father) married Orren Howard (my
grandfather) in l907 in Eugene, Oregon.
