Hello Jeri,
I had a look at Baca's Czech Immigration Passenger Lists Vol. 6 today,
but I did not find any Leibowitz, Liebowitz or Lebowitz listings. I did
find this listing in the Russian Migration series (Vol. 2), but the age
doesn't match your Max...

Ship: California
Hamburg to New York
Arrived 15 June 1885

Lebowitz, Max age 30, trader
Lebowitz, Hirsch 54, trader
destination for both: Chicago
