Subject: Hager Diary
Date: Fri, 30 May 1997 14:47:40 -0500
The diary that several have mentioned in relation to the Shufords was kept
by Archibald L. Hager. A. L. was a son of William and Sarah (Little) Hager
and came with his parents to Perry Co., Mo. from Lincoln Co., NC when he was
a child. William Hager was a brother to my GGG-grandmother, Polly (Hager)
Eddleman. I presume the family came to Perry Co. in 1828, at the same time
as Henry and Polly Eddleman.
A. L. kept the diary, as mentioned before, from 1844-1884. He never married
and lived with his sister and mother until their deaths. Three of A. L.'s
nephews wanted the diary after his death. In order to settle the argument,
the diary was split into 3 pieces and each nephew kept one piece.
Eventually, a grand-nephew, Medford Cashion, got the 3 pieces and
reassembled the diary. Mr. Cashion provided a copy of the diary to my
uncle, Riley R. Eddleman, some years ago, and I have that copy. Upon Mr.
Cashion's death, I believe the diary was given to the Perry Co. Historical
Society (or at least a copy was). I guess other copies must exist, too.
Several years ago, Gerald Schmidt, a Hager descendant, typed a copy of the
diary on a typewriter. I understand the typed copy was given to someone to
scan and index, but this was 2 years ago and I haven't heard anything about
the progress of this project recently. I sincerely hope the society
publishes it someday. I will call someone in the society and check on the
progress of this possible publication.
A. L. recorded events of southern Perry Co., including births, deaths, and
marriages. Usually there is only 1 sentence per day, and there are often no
entries for a given day. The script is hard to read, the spelling is
creative, and the ink was of variable quality. The legibility of my xerox
copy ranges from excellent to illegible.
Please do not ask me for lookups in the diary. I do not have the time to
spare right now, nor do I want to risk possibility of eyestrain! Just
thought I would let the group know a little more about the diary.
