I just wanted to share an outstanding website:

The first is a document discussing 18th Century PA German Naming Customs.
The second is a cross reference of some German nicknames. I found both to
be very helpful. Of greatest interest is the custom of never using the
first given name. I have seen this in my own family lines. The article
also gives a common formula used in those days for selecting names. The
formula was very helpful.
