One reason for the "rush to Texas" was the fact that Texas was then declared
a REPUBLIC (after they won freedom from Mexican rule) and land was open for
settlers. There were many references of people in the eastern states
leaving their homes with just a note pinned to their doors stating "gone to
Texas."
