Another reason for the move to Texas was that one could easily get "lost"
there, and not have to serve in the war and not have to deal with the tax
collector or the debt collector or the greedy in-law's or whomever.It was a
great place for a wanderer to go. Maybe not for his family but surely for
those who chose to get away from whatever it was that plagued them, or even
just to search for wide open places and "greener grass". These sorts of
places have been endlessly alluring to every adventurous soul. I live in
the west and this part of the world is still tempting to those who think
life is too structured where they are.It's no different here - but they
don't know that till they get here!
There does not have to be any deep seated motive, just the wander lust
would do it. After all their ancestors had crossed an ocean for similar
reasons.
