Dear Edie,
There was a Greenberry Wilson in the late 1700s in western NC. I don't
recall the location, but it was either Burke County or further west. I
believe he came there from Baltimore County, MD.
In the "Inhabitants of Baltimore County, 1763-1774" by Henry C. Peden,
there are the following references to him:
On a list of Baltimore residents, about 1765
On a petition to move county seat of county to Baltimore in 1768
On a list of taxables in West Hundred of Baltimore in 1773.
A Greenbury Green (or perhaps Green Greenbury; its not clear which is
meant since the name is written without a comma as Greenberry Green) is
on a list of taxables in Middle River Upper Hundred in 1773.
There was an early Greenberry family in Anne Arundel County, MD (just
south of Baltimore County on the Eastern Shore). Nicholas Greenbury
recieved land in 1688 ("Settlers of Maryland, 1679-1700", Peter Wilson
Coldham). Col. Nicholas Greenberry was mentioned in a 1693 deposition
("Maryland Deponents, 1639-1779", Henry C. Peden, Jr.) and also in 1694.
Col. Charles Greenbury was mentioned as deceased in a deposition by a
nephew, Col. Henry Ridgely, in 1730 ("More Maryland Deponents, 1716-1799"
by Henry C. Peden, Jr.)
Best Regards,
Ray Yount
