Judy Damewood's excellent information is very welcome. I would, however,
like add to it. I believe in the 1850 Catawba census, where Logan Smyre
was head of household to his four brothers, the 20 yr old Julia was not
his wife but a sister. Logan m. 30 Dec 1852 Harriet Lovenia Rowe, & is
shown in the 1860: L.Q. Smyre 34, Lovenia 25, Adaline 6, Daniel L. 5,
Luther P.2, Catherine 5/12. Meanwhile, Julia Ann m1) 11 Jan 1856 D.L.
Propst & is shown in the 1860: D.F. Propst 29, Juli Ann 30, John 8
(probably the son of a previous marriage), Martha E. 3, Mary 1. Julia
m2) 5 May 1870 M.M. Huit, & is shown in the 1870 census: Moses M. Hewitt
51, Julia A. 40,
Martha Probst 13, Jane 11, Sidney 9, Anna 7.
Does anyone have evidence that George Fry's wife Catherine was a
Gortner? With Clara Shook's help, her maiden
name as Wilfong has fairly well been discounted. There is good evidence
that Catherine Wilfong d/o Jacob m. Henry
Savitz. Lincoln Co. DB 25-911: 5 Aug 1811 Catherine Sevitz (Savitz) &
Daniel Shuford & wife Elizabeth (all of Rowan Co.) to George Wilfong
(Lincoln Co) for $20 sold 82 ac: border: on E. bank of S. fork of
Catawba R., George Fry,Vardry McBee formerly James Wilson, & George
Wilfong's "other" tract; part of a tract formerly owned by Jacob Wilfong
dec'd who devised to Catharine Wilfong now Savitz. Signed Cahterine's
mark "8", Daniel Shuford, & Elisabeth Shuford; witness: none. Witness
oath 3 Aug 1811 (Rowan Co) Daniel & Elisabeth Shuford & Elisabeth
renounces her dower rights before Francis Locke.
As Catherine Savitz, obviously then a widow, & on her own, cannot have
been the wife of George Fry who with his wife Catherine ( m. ca 1782),
were hale & hearty with a family of nine children.
Any help greatly appreciated. Merry Christmas to all.
