Gene,

I did a lot of research with land deeds last summer in Catawba. From these I have culled out the following information about the land surrounding Killian's Meeting House, where Mt Ruhama now stands. And where the National Summitt Reunion will be next month, which I will be at. I could bring you a copy of the deed if you live in the area.

June 10, 1857 - "John Summit to Joseph Bost" Indenture made to sell 120 acres for $360 "on the waters of Maiden Creek" originally "it being a tract of land Granted to David Killian Beginning date the 17, May 1798"

October 18, 1860 - "PH Summit from Joseph Bost" For three hundred dollars "Pumeroy H Summit" bought 149 acres from Joseph Bost "on the waters of Maiden Creek joining lands of sd PH Summit & others Beginning at a pine his own & B-----s Corner on the road leading from Killian's Meeting House to John Summits."

January 10, 1861 - "Pinkney Cline from PH Summit" Indenture from "Pumroy H Summit" of Catawba to Pinkney Cline of Catawba for $120, 59 acres of land "on the waters of Maiden Creek joining lands of Brevard." Joshua Wilson and Sarah J Summit witnesses.

Interesting note: All three sons of John Summit's: Pomeroy, Pinkney and Isaac, who each owned land on the waters of Maiden Creek, died in the Civil War.

I hope this helps,

Glen Summit

Request for information:

I found Mount Ruhama Church with Maiden Creek nearby, located near Oliver's
Crossroads in Catawba County, but I am puzzled about which Killian family
owned land around that Church and when. Can anyone enlighten me?

Thanks,
Gene Killian

Killian's Meeting house was one of the county's origianl German
congregations. The land surrounding Mount Ruhama was originally owned by the
Killian's but was later bought by the Summits, explaining why John Summit
(son of Jacob Summit), Pinkney Summit, Isaac Lanford Summit, and Pomeroy
Hagler Summit all owned land on the waters of Maiden Creek surrounding Mount
Ruhama.
