We have been unable to find many new promising leads in an attempt to answer
all of your questions re: Katie Wilcox Johnson and her whereabouts after
the death of her husband in Tehama County.
We have confirmed most of what you wrote about - the marriage in 1893 [although
our records and the calendar indicate the exact date was Wednesday, 19
April 1893]; his death on 15 Aug 1908 [CADI, page 5450, LDS Film #1686045]and
the only possibility found in the CADI was the Kate Johnson who died at
37 on 3 April 1906 in Sacramento [CADI, page 5452, ibid.]
The only new data concerns his first wife's first marriage to the locally
prominent GURNSEY family, in which she divorced John Van Ransler Gurnsey
after 13 years of marriage months before marrying Mr. Johnson 12 July 1880.
One possibility of locating more information on Mrs. Katie Johnson was
the comment in the newspaper account of their marriage ~ "They will depart
to-day for Woodland [Yolo County, CA] where the bride's parents live."
A careful research of the 1880 US Census for Yolo County might find a 10
to 12 year old girl with the first name of Katie [surname unkown at this
point]? While we do not have the resources to conduct such a search, we
did a quick glance at the first few pages of the 1880 Census for Woodland
in Yolo County [enumerated 1 June 1880] and, for example, on page 4, family
38, dwelling 40, found a Katie A. Capell [sp?], age 10, daughter of J.
S. and Elizabeth Capell.
Yolo County has an excellent collection of genealogical and historical
material. As of 1998, our record shows both the Yolo County Historical
Society, POBox 1447, Woodland CA 95776-1447, phone (530)753-4172 and the
Yolo County Archives, 226 Buckeye Street, Woodland CA 95695, phone (530)
666-8005 ~ "The Archives - should be your first stop for Yolo County Records
~ have not only County Records, but newspapers, school records, photgraphs,
indexes to county histories and access through the library to City directories
and Yolo county history books. Volunteers will do research for a fee of
$10. per hour"
